How to stop yourself from binging on Halloween candy

When trying to slim down, what’s the scariest thing about Halloween? That’s right, the candy... Here’s a strategy to help escape the horror of Halloween weight gain.

When trying to slim down, what's the scariest thing about Halloween?

That's right, the candy... One little bite-sized snickers turns into eating the whole bag… just a couple candy corn turns into two fistfuls. And sure enough, by November 1st, you find you've packed on 5 pounds of chewy nougat.

So what do you do about it? Here's a strategy to help escape the horror of Halloween weight gain.

First, make sure you're fed – physically, mentally and emotionally.

Physically: don't go anywhere starving. You know when you show up somewhere starving, you'll eat just about anything. So make sure you're nourished. That way it's easier to make healthier decisions.

Mentally: give yourself something to get excited about besides candy. Like connecting with friends at a party, wearing your own hot costume or dressing up your pet. There's plenty of other fun to be had at Halloween besides consuming sugar.

Emotionally: making sure you're "clear" of any heavy emotions. For example, don't fume about work or about how your sister never calls as you pass by the candy bowl. Your body will thank you later.

And when it comes to steering clear of the candy you'll be giving to trick or treaters, remember this: Don't give what you don't want to receive.

If you wouldn't want to put it in your body, don't give it out to kids. If it's not good for you, how good do you think it is for them?

I'm not saying be that house that gives out carrot sticks. But, there are healthier versions of treats that won't have you tempted to binge or feeling guilty if you do have a few.

Be a little pro-active this Halloween to ensure you're smooth sailing through this candy-centered holiday!

Have a safe and healthy Halloween!
