You’ve heard the saying, “You are only as old as you feel.” While it might seem like just a pithy saying to make us feel better about the aging process, there IS a lot of truth to it. When we eat well and exercise regularly, we stay healthy and active longer, and our biological age slows down despite the turning of the calendar.
Unfortunately, the flip side is true as well though. Unknowingly we could be aging ourselves prematurely with poor diet and a sedentary lifestyle.
To help you look and feel younger than your years, don’t waste calories on sugary drinks and processed foods that have little nutritional benefit. Instead incorporate these superfoods into your regular diet:
These super fruits are jam-packed with antioxidants that help keep your eyes and memory sharp as well as prevent injuries by protecting your joints. Blackberries are particularly high in anthocyanins, which is also good for the heart. An added bonus to eating berries: they fight wrinkles, so eat up.
Besides, aiding in digestion and keeping your gut healthy, yogurt helps preserve muscles and is a good source of protein. Be wary though of choosing brands that have a lot of added sugar.
This is a great protein-packed, but low-fat option for breakfast. Eating oatmeal on a regular basis can protect you from heart disease and diabetes and reduce your risk of colon cancer. Just be careful of adding too much sugar and if using instant oatmeal, read the nutrition label calories for extra sugars and calories.
This leafy green is great for both your bones and your eyes. With omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin K, calcium and lutein, a little bit of kale will go a long way to keeping you healthy. A lot of dark leafy greens are also good for your skin by boosting production of collagen (no need for those injections!), so don’t skimp on that salad.
Did you know that this summertime favorite fruit is great for muscle soreness? It contains citrulline, an amino acid essential for good circulation. Added bonus: watermelon can help wake up your libido too.
