This is my pal Miriam at the Rittenhouse Square Flower Market, which is, believe it or not, in its 95th year! When I was a little girl - not quite 95 years ago, please! - I used to go with my mother. It's a wonderful event, being held this year today (Wednesday) and tomorrow (Thursday), from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., right in the square. For the first time, it's happening before Mother's Day. I bought a lovely pair of peridot earrings for my daughter-in-law, who is enjoying her first Mother's Day this year (and Kara, I hope you aren't reading this!), but for those of you who aren't getting on a plane this weekend to visit your daughter-in-law or daughter or mother or sister, there are lots of fun plants to buy for gifts. Big sellers at the Friends of Rittenhouse Square booth, where I was the plant-geek-in-residence today for a couple of hours, were the tomato and herb seedlings, the hanging baskets and the South African daisies. Other folks at the market are selling orchids, plants, of course, and jewelry, even rescued pets. (I couldn't go near that booth. You know I'd come away with an animal. I can't resist.) This is such a worthy event, and I know the organizers work like crazy every year. Last year they raised $28,000 for four charities and that money, take my word for it, was raised dollar by dollar. And it's always great fun to hang out in Philadelphia's favorite, most eclectic, square to watch the people, talk to friends and meet new folks. Today I met Lee and Marsha, caught up with Curtis, Tammy, Barbara and Miriam, and met a ton of nice people who came by to buy or chat, including Judy with the deer problem and the guy trying to coax a pineapple from his pineapple plant. I thought it interesting that today, the rain stopped. Just in time. May it continue tomorrow.

About Virginia A. Smith
Ginny Smith, a Philadelphia native, worked as a reporter at newspapers in New York, Connecticut and Ohio – with six short months at the end of the Bulletin tossed in – before returning to Philadelphia in 1985 to join the Inquirer. Her favorite beats here have included Center City, roving around Pennsylvania (and getting paid for it!) and alternative medicine. She’s also been City Editor and Pennsylvania Editor. Ginny has been happily writing – and learning - about gardening fulltime since 2006. She’s won two silver medals of achievement from the national Garden Writers Association and in 2011, Bartram’s Garden honored her with its Green Exemplar award for her stories about “the region’s deeply rooted horticultural history, cultural attractions and bountiful gardens.”
