Nutter to have 1 p.m. news conference on library closings

After taking a pounding for weeks over his decision to close 11 city library branches, Mayor Michael Nutter has

scheduled a news conference at 1 p.m. today to discuss the situation.

Nutter ordered to branches shut as a result of the $1 billion deficit the city faces over the next five years, Nutter is

scaling back programs across the board.

A spokesman for the mayor did not immediately return a call this morning asking for details about the press conference.

Last week, three Philadelphia council members have filed an emergency motion in Common Pleas Court

seeking to prevent the mayor from closing the libraries without the council’s permission.

The motion filed by City Council members Bill Green, Jack Kelly and

Jannie Blackwell cites two ordinances and a section of the city charter in

saying the mayor cannot sell city buildings without council approval.
