The flashing sign on a Bucks County thoroughfare had a most ominous warning: “ZOMBIES AHEAD.”

That hoax message appeared Sunday night on a sign set up to alert motorists of bridge construction on Route 212 in Richland Township.

PennDOT spokesman Gene Blaum tells the Intelligencer newspaper that officials are investigating how someone could break the locks, get at the controls and change the message.

But instructions on how to change flashing sign messages have been posted on Web sites in recent months, and similar pranks are being reported from Texas to Australia.

Blaum says officials fear warning-sign tampering could endanger motorists.
