Inquirer staff writer Zoe Tillman reports:
During their all-expenses-paid trip to Walt Disney World this past weekend, the children of Creative Steps day camp were treated to a surprise visit from their host, media mogul Tyler Perry.
Perry - a popular African American producer, actor and writer - sponsored the trip after learning about the northeast Philadelphia campers, who were allegedly asked not to return to a suburban swim club because of their race. The state Human Relations Commission has a pending investigation against The Valley Club in Huntingdon Valley.
About sixty-five campers, each accompanied by a guardian, flew into the Orlando, Fla. theme park on July 31 and returned to Philadelphia on August 3.
Perry joined the campers on their first day, talking to them for 45 minutes about racism and leading them and their families in prayer, said Alethea Wright, executive director of Creative Steps. Another highlight for the campers was a personal meet-and-greet with Disney costumed characters, also arranged by Perry.
“It was something that you … experience once in a lifetime,” she said. “He took time with each and every child.”
