Inquirer staff report:

An 11-mile trip to deliver a giant transmission power transformer from Plymouth Meeting to a PECO substation under construction in Centerpoint, Worcester Township, will affect traffic in the area starting at 9 this morning.

The 23-ton transformer will be moved on a 125-foot long tractor trailer with a state police escort.

The transformer, which is about 18 feet high and 12 feet wide, will travel at a very slow speed along an 11-mile path from PECO's Plymouth Meeting Complex on Gallagher Road, across from the Metroplex, to Fisher Road in the Centerpoint section of Worcester, PECO says.

The convoy will take Gallagher Road, Chemical Road, Germantown Pike, Thomas Road, Flourtown Road, Stenton Avenue, Skippack Pike, S. Valley Forge Road, Morris Road, Wentz Church Road, and finally Fisher Road.

An 11 mile trip, in the middle of the day, traveling "at a very slow speed"? Couldn't this have been done at night so that motorists are minimally impacted?

No. When you move things this tall, you have to be on constant lookout for overhead obstructions. Would you want to be responsible for that job in darkness?
