Sunoco penalized $762,000 for Marcus Hook air quality problems

Inquirer staff report:

Sunoco has been fined $762,000 for air quality violations at its petroleum refinery in Marcus Hook, Delaware County, the state Department of Environmental Protection said today.

“Sunoco emitted nearly twice the permitted limit of particulate matter and an average of four times the permitted level of ammonia from a unit at this facility for more than one year,” Joseph A. Feola, DEP’s Southeast Regional Director, said in a statement. “We take these violations very seriously, and are working with Sunoco to correct the problems.”

The civil penalty is to be paid to the state’s Clean Air Fund.

More than 100 studies since the 1990's, worldwide, link particulate pollution to increased risk of death and cardiovascular illness. A readable summary of the research through 2006 can be found in the article "Health Effects of Fine Particulate Air Pollution: Lines that Connect" by C. Arden Pope, III and Douglas W. Dockery. While it's wholly appropriate that Sunoco should be fined for these emissions, which do not meet the requirements of the Clean Air Act, it'd be far better if they'd prevent them.
