Inquirer staff report:

A Montgomery County woman has been convicted of stealing $78,000 from a youth soccer league, newspapers report this morning.

Maryann Grant, 37, of Red Hill, faces a maximum 7 to 14 years in prison when she is sentenced. No date was set for sentencing.

A jury in Montgomery County Court convicted Grant yesterday of taking the money during her four-year tenure as treasurer of the Valley Soccer Club, for which her son once played.

The Times Herald of Norristown and the Bucks County Courier Times reported Grant’s conviction in this morning’s editions.

Put aside for a second how wrong it is to steal from anybody, let alone a youth soccer club. My question is, how does one steal $78,000 from a soccer club and expect nobody to notice? I didn't know a youth soccer club could have that much money. From reading similar stories like this in the past, she will serve about 18 months, or so. I feel bad for her child.

She better hope she gets sentenced by Judge Buckwalter who presided over the sentencing for Sen. Fumo. If she gets Buckwalter, it will be an easy probation.

First off, how does a soccer league raise $78,000 dollars. Those people should be running the city.

At a minimum, organizations should have 1 person(2 is better) with check writing privileges, and a separate person in charge of reconciling bank accounts.

Wow! No racist comments. I guess because the usual racist commentors assume this woman is white, which she probably is given the locale of her residence. Double standard...again.

$78,000 in a soccer youth league treasury.....wow, what dumb parents.....what did they collect or give for...a new field, uniforms, and paying players...that is absurd.....how stupid can they be.......and no checks and balances on the budget...bet their are more controls on their drafting of players than on the money...typical youth progaram.....trophies are the most importnt thng...not safety, not sportsmanship, not instruction......

So many of these embezzlement crimes involve gambling addicts. With the proliferation of casinos and slots venues, expect to read more of these stories about soccer moms and everyday people being charged with stealing from their employers . . .
