Inquirer staff photographer Sarah Glover reports:
Josie Vargas heard gun fire shortly after 5 a.m. this morning on the 3300 block of Mutter Street, where a 19-year-old woman was killed by gunmen during an apparent home invasion robbery. A 20-year-old man and a 3-year-old were shot and critically wounded, police said.
"I heard more than five gun shots," said Vargas, 29, who lives around the corner on the 100 block of W. Thayer Street in the city's Nicetown section. "But I hear gun shots all the time and paid it no mind." Vargas said she did not even know the home where the shooting took place was occupied. She said she assumed the victims were new to the block, where Christmas decorations are already strung up on some porches.
Lizasuain DeJesus confirmed that the family had recently moved in. "I just saw the lady walk up and down the block with her child," DeJesus said. "I hope the child survives. That's sad."
DeJesus said her own 5-year-old daughter, Arianna, was murdered in 2000 at 6th and Pike Streets. "I don't want no one to go through what I'm going through."
Police said two gunmen were seen fleeing the scene of this morning's shooting in a Crown Victoria. They speculated that the shooting might have been the result of a gambling debt, KYW news radio reported. The adult shooting victims was being treated at Temple University Hospital, and the child who was critically injured was taken to St. Christopher's.
