Police ID man shot by officer

Authorities today identified the naked man who was shot and killed during an altercation with a police officer early Sunday.

Lawrence Kelly, 40, was “agitated, nude, making threats, and talking about God” when police arrived on the 6000 block of Lawndale Avenue after a report of a domestic dispute, said Lt. Frank Vanore, spokesman for the Philadelphia police department.

“He was out of control,” Vanore said. “Officers tried to calm him down and he attacked them.”

Kelly allegedly fought with one patrolman, reached for another officer’s baton, and grabbed a knife before one of the officers fired once.

Kelly’s death marks the third fatal police shooting of the year. Vanore declined to identify the officer who fired on Kelly.
