Inquirer staff writer Jeff Shields reports:

Mayor Nutter said this morning the city will not pick up the cost of a parade if the Phillies win the World Series.

He said he communicated this to the team, citing a policy in place since shortlty after last year’s Championship Parade under which the city will not take on the costs associated with a parade. The city's final bill for last year's Broad Street bash was about $700,000.

“We do not expect to pick up any of the costs related to that kind of event," he said.

Apparently seeking not to jinx the team, he did not refer to the Phillies by name but instead called them “the main celebrating entity” for such a parade.

The team has to win the 6th and 7th games of the series tonight and tomorrow to retain the title.

Obama Gonna Git You Sucka
If Nutter were politically smart he would have kept his mouth closed and said nothing until a "parade" was a possiblility. Phillies are an extreeme long shot at this point. Sad but true. I hope I'm wrong.

I think Nutter is a closet Yankees fan.

If the Fightins win it, then NOBODY, not even The Mayor, can or will stop the parade. It'll just happen whether the government wants it to happen or not.

Monster Joe
Nutter doesn't know jack or should I say Howard calling him Ron Howard last year. Sorry but Ryan Howard looks nothing like Opie.

The way things are going for the Phils, he won't have to pay for one anyway.

If they resolve the SEPTA strike before Thursday night demand that the union employees chip in and pay for the parade. At that point they'll have more money combined then the city will.

$700,000 is a reasonable price for any team in the city to pay for the fun of a championship parade.

Pickwick
In '74, when the Flyers took the Stanley Cup, people danced naked atop street cars. No permit was requested and certainly none was given. Just come pouring out into the streets; there's no way to stop you. Here's hoping you'll be able to party hardy, Philly!

I don't see why the Phillies can't pay for a parade! They get plenty of tax breaks and the average citizen doesn't make nearly as much as the average baseball player. Plus, the fans pay for games! When people celebrate a birthday, graduation or marriage, they or a loved one usually pays for it.

Why should the taxpayers pay for it?
