Man killed in melee at South Jersey birthday party

Inquirer staff writer Sam Wood reports:

A Camden man was shot and killed last night when a party at a South Jersey community center turned violent, authorities said.

Sergio Rivera, 18, of Camden was attending a birthday party at the Wayne R. Bryant Community Center in Lawnside when a fight broke out. As the brawl escalated, someone drew a gun and fired into the floor, said Jason Laughlin, spokesman for the Camden County Prosecutor’s office.

Rivera followed the gunman outside into the center’s parking lot on the 300 block of Charleston Avenue

As he bursued the gunman, Rivera stumbled and fell to the ground “at which point the gunman shot and killed him,” Laughlin said.

Rivera, who was unarmed, died at the scene.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact Investigator Eric Wren of the Prosecutor’s office at 856-225-8444 or Daniel Battista of the Lawnside police at 856-573-6204.
