'I saw Meredith with rollers!'

'I saw Meredith with rollers in her hair!" said Mary Reilly of Philadelphia, one of the early onlookers at the Independence Mall set from which the Today show will broadcast this morning.

The show airs from 7 to 9 a.m. on NBC10, hosted by Meredith Vieira and Matt Lauer.

A few minutes later, Vieira herself comes out, her hair looking properly smooth and full-bodied, and goes along the temporary fence to meet and greet the public.

NBC 10's Bill Henley, though, is still doing live segments about the weather, as a gentle breeze rolls from the Constitution Center to Independence Hall under a half moon.

Vieira records an intro, explaining Today's in town because Pennsylvania is battleground state, and then promising a story about A RAILROAD WORKER WHO IS CUT IN HALF, AND LIVES TO TELL THE STORY.

It's quiet. Relaxed. For now.

While Henley says hello to Vieira, there's a yell, "WHAT ARE YOU DOING!" It's Al Roker, Today's weatherman, clowning around. For his sound check, Roker says, "Hey, Rocky, watch me pull a rabbit out of my hat!"

"It's already on the website? We're all atwitter!" he says, laughing. (Get it? Twitter?)
