Matt Katz writes:

Just after 2 a.m., the police show of force continued, with officers on motorcycles and horseback clearing the streets around Broad. Initially, the police pushed out fans west and east of Broad, which caused some problems around the periphery for a while after midnight. A dumpster fire errupted at 16th and Walnut shortly before 2 a.m. in front of a Starbucks, but the Fire Department arrived quickly and doused the paper fire.

One eyewitness said the police seemed to have been instructed to respond only to acts of property damage, and violence to others. Officers let fans celebrate, often wildly.

The motorcycle police rode down the sidewalks on Walnut Street, clearing stragglers out. While there were still people screaming and partying in Center City after two, the great celebration was winding down.

Congratulations to the Phillies team...a great victory! You sure taught our young Rays a serious lesson. As for you fans...THANKS...you've embarassed the city on national TV again... AGAIN! When will you learn to enjoy victory with class? When will it ever be cool again to say, "I'm a Phillies fan"? You ignorant punks RUIN IT for the rest of us living outside of Philly. I no longer proudly say I'm from Philly...but rather I'm from Havertown PA. Thanks you bunch of alcoholic idiots.

stpetepaul you prude. Boston fans were worst a few years ago as for every other city that wins a championship. Your a fake and when asked where your from I bet you say right outside of Philly because you can't stand the boring town you come from. If we ruined it for you stop reading the Philly paper and get off the blog. I guess I'm a prime example for your post. Go Phils!!

As someone from Havertown, I'm embarrassed by stpetepaul. Do you remember the Detroit or LA riots after titles? Those are things to rip on, not this.

People talking badly about Philly should look up how other cities acted when championships are won. Then again, why have correct info about anything.

The few people that destroy things aren't really even fans. They don't watch or follow the games all year. They are just punks looking to get out of hand. The other 99% true fans love their teams and celebrate in a postive way. This was a total team effort. WORLD CHAMPS BABY! The funny thing is - I think the Philadelphia Soul broke the curse and opened up the door...

I am always amazed at people like Trent who feel the need to post negative thoughts about an entire group of people on a message board. It is even more troubling that his post was made at such an obviously happy time. You need help Trent. I suggest you go find a shrink as soon as you can. Your post oozes with self esteem issues (deep down too). You are unhapy with your own lot in life, so you feel the need to push others down. Please try not to beat your wife or kids today GO PHILLIES

To the people who are "embarrassed" to say they are from Philly, it's rarely Philadelphians who trash their city. It's the goons from the suburbs who come in wreck it and then leave us to clean it up probably because, like you, they think Philly is a "trash can." Do us a favor and stay home.

Netacony, youre so right! Same with center city. All the people who move in from the burbs and live in Center city celebrated violently. I actually stood at frankford and cottman, among the families and happily drunken adults doing nothing but cheering, throwing high fives and requesting horn honks. In the neighborhoods, thats REAL philadelphia. Center City and college students, come here and just have no clue. Go Phils, that team deserved it!

For the most part, the fans celebrated this win with no serious acts of vandalism according to the Police. And whatever took place as far as shattered windows, the FYE store being robbed and those pots (and plants in them) on Walnut Street ? (maybe Market street instead)being knocked over, yeah, this was uncalled for/not needed/not necessary at all. BUT...compared to Boston (Red Sox win), LA (Lakers win), Chicago (Bulls wins) and Detroit (Pistons wins) this is nothing. Philly did itself proud and will do it again tomorrow. Because...it's PARADE time!!! Congrats to the Phillies Org. to the city of Philly and all of its fans and let's not forget...this is for Tug, for Pope, for Vuk and for Johnny Marz as well as Shane's G-Mom and Charlie's Mom. You are missed, one and all. Thank you Phillies for a Phantastic season!!!!!

Hey, the fans were very well behaved in my opinion. A few so called "phillies fans" photos posted on the DN show one guy wearing a washington capitals t-shirt with an officer standing over him. As one clean-up crew worker said, the city wasn't any worse for wear than after a rowdy new years celebration. PHILLIES FANS RULE!

First of all, there WERE horses, because the mounted police are back in the city. I live one block from Broad and Chestnut Streets, and it was insanity out there. The first hour or so was fun, because people were just happy and screaming. After that, it began to get ugly. We saw a college-age guy fall through the roof of a bus stop and rip his ear off. Another guy was in convulsions on the ground. The planters outside my building were completely trashed, and we saw a group of kids overturn a car on Sansom Street. After going up to our apartment for an hour or so, we came back down to find the riot police on Sansom Street, a fire at the intersection of Broad and Sansom, and people throwing bottles at buildings, with glass flying in every direction. Several Avenue of the Arts signs and lampposts were on the ground, stores along the 1400 block of Chestnut were looted, and people were falling off slowly-moving cars on 15th Street. Riot police were walking in formation from west of City Hall to S. Broad Street and people were running and screaming, throwing things at them. Things quieted down around 2 a.m., except for the sirens of police and rescue vehicles, and this morning, the sidewalks and streets around my building are clean and you'd be hard-pressed to tell what kind of destruction was going on last night. The really sad thing is that I heard numerous people say things like, "So what? The city will clean it up." Is this Detroit during the '60s riots? It's one thing to celebrate and it's another to destroy your own city. My husband and I didn't miss a single Phillies game the entire season, so this championship is as big to us as it is to any other real fan, but my happiness last night was tarnished by the destruction and crude behavior I saw. For the first time ever, I was embarrassed to be a Philadelphian. I hope the parade turns out better, because I know we have more class than we showed the world last night.

Flyersgal517, that's exactly the kind of attitude that makes the city look bad --- when we win, anything goes. Just deal with it. If you don't like it, too bad. Sorry, but I was raised better than that. You can party and celebrate and have a blast without destroying property and making the city spend millions to clean up your unnecessary mess.

The horses were returned to the force a while ago, centercityscam. Also, one post is enought. You really need to get out more often. I think the approach of police was great. If the celebration is limited to gregarious behavior, great. When the celebration goes over the line to vandalism and assault, they need to stop the behavior immediately. I hope the parade goes without a hitch. Go Phillies!!!

Pholks, it's not just philly. It has become the norm to do dumb things like this all over the country. Look at what happened at Penn State a few years ago. How about LA and NY when they win championships? Chaos! Does it make it ok if other citys do it? no. But dont let ANYONE tell you Philly has this problem only. But it is very true when people from outside the city bring in the stupidity. Native Philly Pholk dont act like this.
