Allison Steele and Derrick Nunnally write:

Shortly before midnight, the celebratory mood on Broad Street just south of City Hall started turning ugly. Unruly, drunk Phillis fans jumped on top of SEPTA bus shelters, overturned huge concrete planters in front of office buildings, and swarmed a city trash truck. One fan swung from a streetside banner before falling. There also seemed to be a small fire on Broad Street, between Chestnut and Walnut.

There was a heavy Philadelphia police presence. For the most part, officers were content to observe and let things play out. Police cars and an ambulance slowly moved through the massive crowd. While a few fans started dispersing around midnight, many thousands remained--and many of them were screaming louder than ever.

Meanwhile, the parking lot between Citizens Bank Park and Lincoln Financial Field is filled with broken glass, dancing Phanatics and spilled beer, and police have clustered at the front gate to supervise the riotous celebration.

Through this tumult, Domer Leibensperger was leading his small band of Phillies fans back to their van for the ride back to Hamburg.

He was smiling, even when beer was sprayed his way.
"I'm too old, and I don't get crazy like this anymore," Leibensperger said.
His group picked its way through the debris-strewn lot and allowed a wide berth to the stumbling fans and the garbage cans and police barricades they have knocked over. A few yards away, near a port-a-john, one fan showered a rare stretch of empty asphalt and his companions with a shaken bottle of sparkling wine, hopefully cheap stuff.

None of it scared Leibensperger.
"We'll be alright," he reassured his group.
A police officer said the tailgater-favored parking lot is so far free of serious violence.
