Staff Photographer Clem Murray reports:

Three sections of marble facade stone fell overnight from the top of a building that once housed KYW-TV and the studio for for the Mike Douglas Show at 1619 Walnut Street, spreading debris below and closing the street to traffic during the morning rush hour.

Each panel, measuring approximately three by six feet each, fell about 80 feet  from what is now called The Broadcast Building.

No one was injured, police said.

Traffic was detoured at 15th Street.

Is there a reason why there is not a picture of the actual facade that failed?

Historical Society is part of the problem, they tell you, restoration to its original look, well, smarty pants, they dont have those old masonry tools available, they are in the Smithsonian, they will not bend when dealing with them, they say no to every alternative

Smithsonian? The building is from the 1930's - this isn't a colonial home on 5th Street. They can repair this damage.

1619 Walnut? Brings back memories. The Radio/TV/Film Dept @ Temple used to hold classes there. I had to schlep up there several times a week. To be honest, I don't recall the facade looking like that - I thought it was mostly windows (OK - this is going back to '76 - '77). Anybody know what this building is being used for these days?

I've been on some of those roofs in center city. Between normal wear and tare and contractors, I feel safer walking toward the curb side of the sidewalk. I remember the day I was looking over the roofs, between 9th and 10th on Chestnut St., when a contractors welding torch caused an explosion that blew that roof right into the sky.
