Eagles set meeting with animal welfare groups
Inquirer staff writer Amy Worden reports:
The Philadelphia Eagles have called for a meeting with area animal welfare groups Monday to discuss dogfighting in the wake of their signing Michael Vick.
When asked the format, the Eagles said they would “just listen,” said Gail Luciani, spokeswoman of the Pennsylvania SPCA.
She said the Eagles were going to invite a lot of animal welfare groups, seeking to be inclusive, including the Chester County SPCA and the Delaware County SPCA.
Michael Vick will not attend the meeting, she said.
The meeting is set for 5 pm at the NovaCare complex.

whatever...Vick has been here one week and I haven't heard or seen anything about him helping the community...Vick should be at all the animal shelters cleaning out all the cages and eat the Ron Burgundy cat poop! Oh and one more thing...EAGLES suck! Hope they have the kind of season the Mets are having :) tralala
Eagles want to open some dialogue with the area groups because there are whisper's that none of them will link up with Vick giving him a regional avenue to continue to work. So the Eagles will listen to them, try to get them to lower their voices a bit, as well as get one of them to offer to allow Vick the opportunity to work for them. gee1971

I hope they meet with every animal welfare group but PETA. Please don't give those hateful, terrorist-supporting loons any credibility. WooshMan- The groups should also ask them to abandon the "Eagles" moniker and change it to "Tofu Rolls." Oh and then throw the dude Vicks into dog fighting ring.
I'm done with the Eagles. Had Vick gone elsewhere, we'd be making fun not excuses with "second chances." He had a "second" chance every day for six years and did nothing. He's only sorry he got caught. People like him, felons, can't vote and shouldn't be put in the position of being role models either. The Eagles sold out. amanda718
I don't think the underlying issue is dogfighting. It's letting yourself be pressured by your peers. If Vick's first experience with animal abuse was HIS idea, then he's psychopath. More likely, he was hanging with his boys and someone already in that culture talked him into it. Couldn't handle not being "cool". swash1
without amanda718, the eagles are doomed. is she done with football, or just our home team? schultzy
without amanda718, the eagles are doomed. is she done with football, or just our home team? schultzy- amanda718 -- parents are roll models. NOT ATHLETES!! Just as any other entertainer can still perform after being convicted, so can professional athletes. its called entertainment. get over yourselves. everybody doesnt think the eagles signing of vick is the end of the world. geez, stop worrying so much about dogs and save a child 1st, how about that!
I agree with the letter Tom Hickey, Sr. from DogPAC sent to the Eagles: "sent a letter to Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie urging him to prove his team's commitment to stopping dog abuse by donating AT LEAST the equivalent of Michael Vick's salary to dog shelters and rescues every year that Vick is an Eagle. That would mean donations of $1.6 million this year and $5 million next year, if Vick is still on the team." veritas1325
The eagles are feeling the heat! Keep it up Philly! Don't let them bring down our city! RationAl
The Eagles are trying to do the right thing...(no not the hiring Vick) by trying to get all the groups involved and to see how they would like to use Vick...It just makes sense haters......you can continue to hate and feel they made a mistake.....but think about it....they are going to force him and use him to make good on his "changed" (???) attitude.....Remember he was put away because he was a high profile guy...and PETA finally had a large public figure to point to...so why not use that same standard and let the animal rights groups benefit.......It is NOT a perfect world but here is achnce to help the cause or for you hateres, a chnce to see him "prove" his change..... .. nuggett

What do they need to "listen to" that most people with any ounce of common sense and humanity already know: torturing, drowning, electrocuting, hanging, beating, shooting, and killing another living creature for pleasure and amusement is wrong? That it is wrong to allow dogs to rip each other and other animals apart and call it an entertaining "sport?" Maybe I am missing something, but there is nothing to discuss. Dogfighting is deplorable and unconscionable and has no place in a civilized society. Those that engage in such an activity have no moral scruples. End of discussion. Jame Gumb- Swash1, I think you are absolutely right. And if Vick wants to redeem himself in the eyes of fans, he should open up his multi-million dollar checkbook, think of a nice amount to donate to the Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society, then add three zeros to it (not including the ones after the decimal point). THAT will be a true redeeming factor.
What M. Vick did was wrong, and yes, he should have been punished by the law, and he was, and served his time. However, people in glass houses, shouldn't throw stones. To all the irrate eagle fans that are complaining they will no longer support. Whatever! If Vick is responsible for taking the Eagles to the superbowl, you'll be on his jersey tail just like you do all the other players. Also, for "everyone" that's complaining. Who are you to judge? Seriously, who are you? Have you looked into your own life or past, what will be found? There's not a perfect person that walks the face of this earth. But it so easy to judge someone else's wrong doing when the finger isn't being pointed at you. Another thing, if I'm not mistaken, wasn't Michael Phelps caught on tape smoking a marijuana bomb pipe. Hey, he's still swimming, still getting endorsments. So are so many other athletes, politicians, you name it. Another thing, when M. Vick was first released from prison and working with the construction company, where were the protestors then? If it were one of your children/family members it would be a entirely different story. The excuse would be, "he had a troubled child hood". So people stop judging, get your own life right and stop trying to be the ruler in somone elses. green365

Considering this is all because of Vick, why not have him at the meeting? Shouldn't he be an active participant? Why hide him from these groups? I thought he was supposed to start working with them? I can't help but feel the Eagles and Vick are trying to best stage an event and that the Eagles want to set everything up before Vick enters the room. What Vick did was beyond a "mistake". A mistake is something one does once, not over and over and certainly not as a business. I'm tired of being made to feel guilty over not feeling sorry for him. Michael Vick brought this on himself. Prison was his punishment. Did he learn anything? We won't know until he starts reaching out in the communities and if he does it beyond the contract time. I wish Vick well, but please don't expect me to fawn over his remorse. I want him to prove that he now knows and believes what he was doing was wrong and not just because wrong because he got caught. kmon
And did the Phillies meet with domestic violence groups after Brett Myers stomped his wife and did anyone care if they did or didn't? mlr710
All this talk about Stallworth, Meyers, etc. has convinced me ... that stricter rules need to be put in place to get all these people out of pro sports because they are doing more damage than good. RussOCNJ

nuggett its good to see at least someone in this city is making some sense of this situation. well done. onetimer
Holding a meeting is not be pro active, it's just a meeting. Believe me the eagles will stall and bs their way thru this whole thing until the people forget (they always do) and in the end the eagles and vick will have done nothing in the way of animal rights. This whole thing has nothing to do with second chances it's a desperate team looking for any angle to win a super bowl. I will be shocked if they make the playoffs !!!!!! lalleva
RationAl-kudos to you sir. The Eagles are feeling the heat. Father of the year Andy Reid is headed for collapse with arrogant Jeff Lurie. Dr. Michael
Dr.Michael, what color is the sky in your world? LOL! The Eagles aren't feeling any heat...oh, did you buy your jersey yet? We know you're the biggest Vick fan there ever was! Hurry, not many left! mlr710
I bet the amimal groups will try to shake down the EAGELS.Remember if you eat meat you kill animals every day.EAGLES don't give them a dime sophwill
Once again "TOO LITTLE TOO LATE" Eagles. You should have had this meeting before you hired this savage to represent your team. Do they have to sit and hear your bleeding heart rhetoric about second chances and forgiveness. Pay up Lurie. That $1500 donation was joke. You spend more than that on a suit. Match the Monster's salary then maybe someone might believe what you have to say. mcaraffa

Is Kim Myers an animal rights activist?? I wonder what she thinks about these fake protestors who just got interested in animal rights last week. mlr710
Everyone deserves a second chance, even you. Any addicts or alcoholics, ex abusers, thieves, liars, deadbeat parents, or just generally screwed up people on here? Ever had someone give you a second chance on your job, your marriage, in school, the bank with your mortgage.....if so, remember when, and give Vick, the empathy someone gave you when you were down. The soapbox routine is just plain lame. philligurl
No, not everyone deserves a second chance. There are no automatic do-overs in life. *I cheated on my wife, do-over! I committed insurance fraud, do-over! I was a deadbeat dad and now my grown kids want nothing to do with me, do-over!* No, you earn that right to get a second chance by showing that you are truly sorry for your actions and by not allowing it to ever happen again. Only time will tell if Vick has earned his second chance, but just going to jail and serving his time isn't going to cut it and proves nothing of just how sorry he is or how much he realizes how wrong his actions were. Jame Gumb
I'm tired of all this namby-pamby second chance talk. Tell that to the innocent dogs he brutally tortured and killed for fun and amusement. Where are there second chances? Jame Gumb
^ Sorry, I meant: Where are their second chances? Jame Gumb
No one deserves a second chance. Second chances are earned. Let's see you do something wrong to someone then say sorry I want things to go back to normal now, and see what happens? Trust, and respect, etc...are all earned back over time. By saying your sorry, you are asking for the opportunity to prove you are worthy of having that second chance. MFPhils
by the way...I wonder how many of these business execs who embezzeled and comitted fraud are going to be getting there old jobs back when they get out of jail? How many of you business owners are going to hire them? They would be a hek of a talent at a low price...go ahead and give them a shot. MFPhils
I for one am all for Bernie 'Ponzi Scheme' Madoff getting a second chance just as soon as he gets out of jail. Kenneth Lay too. Oh craps, he died before he could start his bid. dont_be_a_hater
Given the moral bankruptcy of the Eagles in the light of their signing Vick, I suspect that their 'discussion' about dogfighting will be asking for tips. I hope the Eagles lose every game they play and that their games are disrupted by protestors holding up placards showing photos of abused and tortured animals. CalGall
"Being a cancer survivor, I do a lot of charity work down here in Atlanta and frequently ask players when they can help," Kincade said. "I asked Mike three different times for help to see children who suffer from cancer--and all three times he came through. I can't tell what that says about the guy. You can ask different stars here in Atlanta or ask the various teams, and you'll get them to reach out with goodie bags for the kids, or players who will take a few pictures and move on. "But when Vick showed up, all three times, Vick's handlers would bring extra stuff in these large bags, which came out of Mike's own pocket. He only had two conditions: that there was no press coverage at the event and that I didn't speak about what he did on the air. He wanted it private. But I was there. I saw what he did. I saw him interact with these sick children, and really talked to them, spend time with them. http://www.610wip.com/pages/5040684.php mlr710

mlr710 - Phillies did meet with at least one DV group after the Brett Meyers incident. Difference between Meyers and Vick is Brett's wife could have left him and/or pressed charges, but she did neither. The dogs in this case did not have the choice of leaving but instead were tortured and killed. phillyccgwm

mlr710, thank you for sharing that. That is great to know that there is kindness in his heart. I never thought of Vick as being a wholly evil person. I'll save that term for the real sociopaths (Dahmer, Bundy, etc.). But what does that have to do with what he did to those dogs? As someone who volunteers my time helping at various women's organizations, makes items that are sold in order to support uninsured children (100% goes to them, so that's on my dime), and donates items to local children's hospitals (specifically chemo caps), I really don't see the correlation. By the way, I am also a vegan. This isn't about dog-loving, this is about life-loving. I see everything as being interconnected. I agree with some of the other posters, second chances are earned, not granted. Do I believe Vick deserves a second chance? No, I don't believe in such an entitlement, but I do believe he deserves to earn his second chance only after he proves himself worthy. When? I don't know. It's going to take a lot of time and he's really going to have to step up and show just how remorseful he is. Of course, it isn't me that he needs to prove it to. It really isn't any of us. He needs to prove it to himself. I will show him compassion and pray that he is able to do the right thing and really make a difference. I feel sorry for the guy. I feel sad that he no qualms about doing what he did in the first place. As an optimistic person, I believe in the good of people and I really want to believe that he will step up. I want to believe that his actions were not in vain. If he can touch other people and help them realize that dogfighting is cruel and by doing so, save countless animals and people, then (even though he might not be all good in my book), he will be worthy of that judgmental-free second chance. Professor Smart E. Pants, PhD.
The Eagles are desperate to get rid of the bad publicity surrounding Vick. Why doesn't Lurie put his money where his mouth is and donate $1.6 million to each rescue that works with fighting pits????? That would speak volumes. padogsrule
No amount of prison time will ever make Vick a decent human being. Has he changed? I rather doubt it. He is a grown man, yet he needs " handlers" to tell him what to say, and how to say it. Does anyone really think he would be working with the Humane Society, if he didnt have to?? He didnt care about any animals before. Why should now be any different. Some of the Eagle sponsors are probably putting pressure on the Eagles to do something to diffuse this mess. Budweiser responded to my letter of protest,by sending me a list of animal groups that they support, and said they will rethink their sponsorship of the Eagles after the 2009 season. At least someone has integrity. JoAnnD2
Joann, Budweisser isn't thinking bout dropping its sponsorship. LOL, surely you can't believe that. mlr710
mlr710 - Really, you must have stepped out to the restroom when the issue came up at the Board Meeting. flagator
All of pro sports should have a rule not to employ felons. If convicted of a crime they cannot play and make the big bucks. They can go work at walmart- or for a lawn service....and be poor. KarenD
Don't get me wrong - I totally condemm what Michael Vick did to those dogs. However, how many of you wear leather shoes, belts, watchbands, own leather bags, briefcases? Do some research (lcanimal.org - then click on "Campaigns")on how the cows are treated before they are slaughtered to make your nice leather things. If you feel outraged by what Michael Vick did, why aren't you protesting against the Eagles, or any football team for that matter, for using leather in the footballs. And, yes, footballs ARE made of leather not pigskin. psu72
It would have been more appropriate for the Eagles to "listen" to the animal rights organizations BEFORE they signed Vick. ej610- Parents are roll models? I always thought they were bagel models. Can someone explain why all this credit to Vick reforming is being given before he's proven anything other than that he takes remorse coaching well? Why didn't he have to prove it, by working in the community for a year or so - then perhaps he could be believed. Personally, I just think he's sorry for being caught, losing his rep, and 200 million dollars. Thanks again Fatman, for shoving this down our throats so somehow you feel better about being a terrible parent. COskier
swash1: Vick blamed his culture for the behvior. He said he was raised with dogfighting & that he never thought it was wrong until he heard the prison door close on him. According to Vick, It wasn't peer pressure that made him do it. It was/is acceptable behavior in his view. His behavior cannot be excused by a peer pressure theory. Please work harder if you wish to convince people that he should be forgiven for making dogs kill each other. Let's not try to whitewash the facts away. http://www.examiner.com/x-5919-Norfolk-Crime-Examiner~y2009m5d21-Like-most-criminals-Michael-Vick-is-only-sorry-he-got-caught EcoManiac
IT DOESN'T MATTER: Has Vick already violated the terms of his reinstatement? August 22, 2009 4:02 PM ET We get a lot of e-mails every day. Often, the message carries a subject line that reflects a gross exaggeration (at best) of the information contained therein. So when perusing the e-mail box after taking a workout break (and then eating a lunch big enough to more than offset the benefits of the workout), I shrugged when I saw the following message heading: "Mike Vick may have already violated terms of NFL reinstatement." Then I opened the message. It contained a link to an August 16 item in the New York Post. Brian Costello of the Post writes in the first paragraph of the article that, on the evening after Vick's return to the practice field, he "sat in a corner booth . . . in the Riverbend Bar & Grill, sipping on a Grey Goose and pineapple juice and talking with two friends." Grey Goose, for those of you unfamiliar with Maurice Clarett, is vodka. The problem? Vick's conditional reinstatement to the NFL contains an express prohibition against the use of drugs and alcohol.
