Bail set at $250,000 for 'Hipster Grifter'

Bail has been set at a quarter million dollars for a woman dubbed the "Hipster Grifter" and wanted in Salt Lake City for stealing at least $60,000.

Kari Ferrell, 22, was arrested Sunday night in Philadelphia.

Ferrell, who has a large tatoo of a phoenix on her chest, was the subject of a wanted video posted on YouTube by the the Salt Lake City police, which said she stole $60,000 through a mix of bad and forged checks and retail theft.

Her bail was set at a hearing last night and she can be released by posting 10 percent of it, or $25,000. She has an extradition hearing set for May 15, according to court records.

Before her arrest, Ferrell  posted a video confession of sorts online at animalnewyork.com.

"I am very sorry for everything I have done," she says on it.

The New York Observer reported on Ferrell's doings last month, saying she moved to Brooklyn last August and found a job at Vice magazine. The Observer, which dubbed her the "Hipster Grifter," also said she was making a name for herself as a con artist, claiming at one point that she was dying of cancer.

Ferrell claimed she surrendered to police in Philadelphia because, she told animalnewyork.com,  "I didn't want to do it in New York."

But police said officers who had been summoned arrested her on the unit block of North 11th Street, where one of the so-called Chinatown buses from New York stops. Details on why the officers were called -- and by whom -- were not available.
