Longtime TV sports anchor Gary Papa has died, WPVI-TV reported on its Web site today.
Papa joined the station in 1981, and became sports director in 1990, according to 6ABC. He was diagnosed with prostate cancer, he told viewers in 2004, and the effects of his treatment were visible after his absences from the air.
Update: We've posted a full story, where more details will be added as the reporting continues.

rest in peace
Dear Gary,
You fought the good fight, sir. I'm so glad to have known you in the Channel 6 family. I'm sorry that you could not stay with us a few more years. You are a courageous inspiration to keep kicking in spite of a serious illness. Never give up, never surrender. We will love and remember you always. My heart and condolences go out to the Papa family. -EBG
may god bless your family
He displayed a remarkably brave, nonchalant, composure, never focusing on himself.
I remember Jim O'brien when he passed. I cried then as well.
Gary you will be missed, your were special......
Wasthed him on TV just last week, still smiling and laughing as he has through this whole ordeal. What an inspiration. RIP Buddy.

Action News will never be the same without you, Gary.
