Inquirer staff report:
The operators of the Atlantic City Expressway are weighing the option of making the toll road cash-free.
Drivers would still have to pay the tolls, but they would be collected through either E-ZPass or monthly bills linked to license plates.
The second option would carry a 10-percent surcharge. Sixty-percent of motorists on the expressway already use E-ZPass.
The South Jersey Transportation Authority is awaiting the results of a study on the proposal, expected in the fall, before making a decision.

I will not get EZPass no matter what.
I don't understand why everyone doesn't have EZ Pass.
EZ Pass rocks! I never have to wait in line to pay or scramble looking for cash.
So they're basically attempting to punish the occasional visitors to NJ by tagging on a 10% surcharge for not using EZPass? This sounds like a flawed idea from the get-go.
I don't get one because I drive toll roads maybe 3 or 4 times a year and I would have to put $25 into the account, which would take me years to use up.
Yeah let's eliminate even more jobs! Idiot politicians!
Installing an electronic system would provide much more meaningful jobs than toll collecting.
Great idea...it should make traffic flow more smoothly. In case you didn't notice, EZ Pass is used throughout the Northeast US; I'm rarely in NJ but frequently use EZ Pass. And yes, even if you only use toll roads 3-4 times a year, you could spend to $25 pretty easily. DRPA bridge tolls are $4, and the Expressway toll is another $5 (round trip).
Why anyone would not have EZ pass living in this area is beyond me? So put $25 in your account and let it sit for a while. It's there when you need it. It cuts down on congestion and time you spend at the tolls.
Non-EZ pass drivers should absolutely be paying a higher price. Traditional toll lanes mean more traffic and higher costs for the transportation authority, which means using more direct tax dollars, increasing the toll amount, or both. EZ Pass is efficient in cost and for traffic circulation. If people refuse to get EZ Pass, that is their prerogative, but they should pay a proportionate amount given the fact that they are the ones burdening the system.
Bad idea... amd804 is correct...
great idea. We should not be paying someone a state salary to collect money. That money could go right back into the highways and bridges.
Thieves
Please, please, please make it all EZ-Pass!! I never understood driving home Sunday's evenings and waiting in the three mile back up starting at exit 9 because they have only 2 EZ-Pass lanes open. All tolls should be EZ-Pass. No offense to the unions but toll taking is not skilled labor, if they can collect cash in a booth they can work at a restaurant, and frankly it would be beneficial to their health. All EZ Pass, all the time!
New Jersey, put on your marketing hat. Rather than call it a surcharge and make it look like you are penalizing occassional visitors to the state, raise the Toll for cash users, keep it the same for EZ Pass users, and call it a discount for the EZ pass user. It just sounds better and less Jersey like.
