Inquirer staff writer Maria Panaritis reports from King of Prussia:

They’re here from Drexel Hill, Bethlehem, New Jersey – all over. And they’re determined to find the best deals of the year at the east coast’s largest shopping mall. So far, five hours into the marathon day, shoppers at the King of Prussia Mall are showing up in large numbers and walking out with bags full of marked down merchandise. When super-luxury retailer Neiman Marcus is giving out $50 gift cards between 9 a.m. and noon, and other retailers are posting lucrative deals too, it’s music to the ears of die-hards like the mom-and-daughter team of Brenda Dwinal and Katie Kupstas.

“This, “ said Dwinal, 55, “is nothing.” She was wrestling with no fewer than six over-stuffed bags.

She and her daughter were close to filling up an SUV with bags of gifts scooped since they began their binge at 3 a.m. in Springfield, Delaware County, before arriving at King-of-Prussia at 7 a.m.

“We only started doing this five years ago,” said Dwinal, of Bethlehem, who comes down for Thanksgiving to visit her daughter in Drexel Hill before shopping together on Black Friday. “It saves a ton of money.”

Her niece, Julie Boring, a 22-year-old Penn State senior, was speechless on this, her first Black Friday jaunt with the formidable shopping duo. “I knew I was going to get my butt whooped,” she said. Her job: Help carry all the bags.
