Flyers start 0-2 for first time since '08

POSTED: Sunday, January 20, 2013, 3:12 PM

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Five percent of the Flyers' season is gone, and they've yet to register a point in the standings. That's the unfortunate reality of the NHL's shortened, 48-game season.

Almost all of the Flyers' troubles on their opening weekend could be attributed to shoddy special teams play. Buffalo scored separate power play and shorthanded goals over the final 6 minutes to break a 2-2 tie, dropping the Flyers, 5-2, in their home-opener at the First Niagara Center.

The Flyers were back on the ice early Sunday for their second nationally-televised game of the weekend, less than 20 hours after going 0-for-5 on the power play while allowing 2-of-3 power play goals against Pittsburgh on Saturday.

The Flyers are now 20-14-11 all-time in their first road contest of a season.

This is the Flyers' first 0-2-0 start to the season since 2008. In fact, it took them nearly 85 minutes of play to gain their first lead of the season, which Claude Giroux did with a top-shelf, power play snipe in the second period.

That lead lasted just 10:57, before Thomas Vanek matched for Buffalo with his own man-advantage tally.

Defenseman Tyler Myers broke a 2-2 tie with 5:03 left in the third period. Newly-acquired defenseman Luke Schenn was in the box for two of Buffalo's three power play goals. Cody Hodgson added an insurance goal for the Sabres and Vanek iced it with an empty-netter.

The Flyers closed their first weeked just 4-for-9 on the penalty kill and 1-for-9 on the power play.

SLAP SHOTS: Forward Zac Rinaldo left the game midway through the first period with a “lower-body” injury and did not return. NBC’s Pierre McGuire reported on-air that Rinaldo was cut my a skate. The Flyers are expected to provide more information post-game ... Former Flyer Ville Leino missed the game with a right hip injury ... Moorestown, N.J., native T.J. Brennan was a healthy scratch for Buffalo. The Sabres do not want to risk sending Brennan, 23, back to AHL Rochester through waivers for risk he’ll be claimed ... The Sabres were also missing perennial thorn Nathan Gerbe, who is still recovering from back surgery.

Got robbed on two (2) goals today, but still you cannot expect to win when your best player is 18 year old Scott Laughton who is here on a five (5) day trial. At this point I wolld put him on the same line as Giroux and move Schenn to checking line. Anybody seen Matt Read?

You said it BE! It's never the fact the Flyers got worked. It's ALWAYS the officiating. The Flyers do more diving and whining than any team, have Hartnell who either hits from behind or after the whistle, but the refs are bias against them.

Terrible officiating in that game. Does anyone know if officials can be sanctioned by the league for bad calls? The interference call alone was a disgrace.

That said, the Flyers did on defense what the Phillies did in the outfield this offseason; put a bunch of maybes together and hope it works. It doesn't. The offense is missing the depth it had with Jagr and JVR last year and Bryz, while he hasn't been horrendous, is not worth the money he's getting. The writing is on the wall for a bad year, but if it's going to happen, best it be in a 48 game season with two potential superstars at the top of the draft.

wow, negadelphia! Flyers got jobbed on the calls, Brzy made some great saves, and Hartnell has a nice right cross. I saw a lot of positives this weekend, and when Briere comes back, scoring will go back up. Flyers will make the playoffs and stoked that Bryz is playing good. Don't know what games everyone else watched, but I'm not jumping off a bridge yet. Hockey is back, it was 2 tough losses in less then 24 hours, and there was no quit in the team. Lighten up.

The purpose of any professional team should be to win a championship, nothing less. I LOVE all the Philly teams, and have stood by them my whole life, which is a long time, but we are again in dark times. No way the Flyers will win the Stanley Cup and that's the only thing I care about. Sad to say 2 games into the season. Sixers are not even close. Eagles are trying to sort through the rubble of a train wreck. Phillies could surprise us, who knows. Hope springs eternal.

Arcadegm, this is a 48 game season and they've suffered 2 inter conference losses in less than 24 hours. There are not a lot of positives with this season so far. Add to the fact, the traditional weak teams (Florida, Tampa, Carolina) in the conference improved and the Flyers did not. In fact, they have less now in terms of offense than last year. This is not a guaranteed playoff team this year.

Kudos to Harntell for really stepping up and taking on known thug Drew Stafford. He really showed his mettle there. Who is next on his list? Stamkos? Oh and Giroux better watch out against NJ. They need to make him pay for his dirty hit on Zubrus.

Dont think you can put this on Bryz at all, granted there was goals that should have been routine saves but the Flyers just look sloppy, especially early game. If they play like they do in 2nd and early 3rd, they should be alright. We will be alright, just watch!

The Refs are terrible but they are not biased. They made a couple horrible calls that benefited the Flyers. But they couldn't take advantage of it. ALSO remember the refs are also coming off a long layoff. Bottom line is that they are 0-2 and need a win vs the Devils badly. Giroux seems like the only guy who has shown up so far.

This game was gifted to Buffalo. 2 legit goals disallowed, one bad goal by Buffalo allowed, a WHOLE BUNCH of BS penalties (Hartnell's hit, the goalie "interference" call). It was like playing Crysby and the NHL Penguins again.

If you bothered to watch the game, you know one PHL goal goal was waived off due to a bogus interference call and a BUF goal was kicked in. Still, they looked very listless...need a "spark plug" type to get them motivated. Bryz did what he could do...looks like they could dig themselves in a deep hole pretty quickly this season.

How well did you watch it " The Buffalo goal went of his skate. He didn't kick it in. It was obvious from the ceiling camera, it was a momentum deflection of the skate. The player didn't even know it was there.

Do you fans know how much money the Flyers have to send to teams that cant exist on their own, out of your money spent???
Lets start with 6 mill a year plus if I read the CBA correctly 35% of playoff revenue??
This is a bailout, its communism and makes Obamacare look like a right wing tea party idea.
Why do Flyer/Ranger/Toronto/Detroit fans have to subsidize failing franchises?
This is a ripoff and as long as you blindly go to games & buy souveniers, the Flyers will never win the Cup , its reserved for failing teams and franchises below the mason dixon line, or teams that suck up to Bettman.

This is not just a goalie issue. It is how they play as a team. Year after year, no matter who is on the team, they don't come out with passion, awareness of one another on the ice, and controlling the puck against the other team. The game has changed since they won the Cup in the 70's, and to win now, they need to adapt to whatever the other team is doing. Their intensity has to be for the entire sixty minute game. With the play we have all seen year after year, you cannot continue to place yourself in bad spots and try to rebound because time will eventually run out.

Don't throw this Flyer squad under the bus just yet. Two legitimate goals by the Flyers were disallowed tonight and the Sabres were clearly more rested in period 3. Bryz was perfeclty okay, but the PK unit totally messed it up again today. Also, apart from G again there was no scoring touch in them. Yes, Simmods received a lot of deserved praise from the NBC commentators, yet he has missed on a number of juicy scoring chances so far. Disappointed in Luke Schenn so far.

Anyone blaming goaltending has no idea how to dissect and analyze this sport. Bryzgalov was the only reason that this game was not a complete embarrassment. Same issues as last season, but they have significantly less skill this year. All of you Carle bashers need to watch the slow, laborious defence try to slug themselves out of their own zone. Simmonds had the best season he will ever have, last year. The guy who misses open nets, and tries to pass to guys that are completely covered...that is Simmonds. A very hard worker, and a great third line player.

Speaking of third line players.....it is Brayden Schenn time yet again. He needs to accept his fate as a role player in this league. He is a third line winger. Period. Remember when he was in the AHL and touted as the best player not in the AHL. Well, not he looks like the best AHL blayer currently in the NHL. Not skilled enough to be a top six forward, and not working hard enough to be a grinder.

This team will very likely miss the playoffs. And it will happen in spite of the great goaltending they are currently getting..

You're right, i meant to say, Gotta love how "some"... Although maybe you should reread these posts, cause it's more like 70 outta 100 posters are ready to write this team off. I'd guess the negativity stems from our title droughts, people get real tired of all the false hopes year after year and i get that, but whats the point of being a fan if you're ready to bail on your team after 2 freakin games. Talk about a "Dolt".

Bryz played amazing, I am not sure what the rest of you are watching.. When the D is non-existent, you can't blame the goalie for deflected shots and rebounds, and/or breakaways... Almost all the goals scored against him were when the Flyers were short. They need to get in shape and fast!

Man, I'm getting tired of all "the sky is falling" fans out there. Been an absolute die-hard Philly fan my entire life-- through good times and bad. Why is it that after two freaking games everyone is complaining about how terrible things are. Two games people! You guys seriously make me embarrassed to shout out that I'm a Philly fan. We'll end up probably a #5 seed in the playoffs and then anything can happen. Not where we want to be, but not bad with our core group of young guys (Giroux, Read, Schenn's , Simmonds, Couturier, Laughton). And Bryz hasn't played that bad--The PP is the problem, which Laviolette will fix. Get off the ledge people- all's good. It could be worse, you could have all been born Penguin or Devil fans. 0-48 is better than that!

Not throwing in the towel by any means but the chemistry does not look to be there for this team. I look for them to move swiftly to pick up a waiver wire type of pick up or to look for help from someone unsigned. They need more than Simmonds and Hartnell driving the net. Does anyone know where Mike Knuble is these days?

My comments now are as they were all of last year..because nothing has changed..
We do not have a good coach. As a matter of fact, he flat out stinks to high heaven.
Yes, I know he doesn't skate & doesn't do what players are supposed to do out there...but that is exactly the point.
Last year, he needed to call his time out within the first 3 minutes 6 times..and once in the playoffs. This is unacceptable! It should be an embarassment to the team, the fans, and himself.. Sadly, it's not.
This example is exactly what you saw in game 1. The team was not prepared to take the ice. They gave up goals..it should have been more, and it cost them the game. This is squarely on the coach...
The team was the most penalized in the league last year..this shows a complete lack of dicipline. So far too hasn't changed.
This is squarely on the coach as well.
His system that plays run n' gun, does not stress defense..Not from defensemen and especially not from the forwards, it's his system & it's a losers system. It doesn't work in any sport, and is squarely on the coach.
With a defense that is slow, getting old, and a goalie that raises more questions than not, his system is doomed to fail. It cannot win.
Homer needs to cut his losses and find someone who can get the most from what he's got. someone who will get the team to play a tight checking, force & take avantage of turnovers style and hope one of the 2 guys in net plays slightly better than average. This is the only way we can hope to win.
I'm a Flyers fan from the beginning, a Flyers fan for life.
But I've seen enough hockey in my time to be realisitc and know what I'm looking at, and it isn't good.

Homer, don't trade that 2013 1st round pick. It may be a top 5 pick.

The biggest issue with the overwhelming majority of Flyers teams over the past (almost) 40 years is that they are coached and play to the attitude of most of the fan base instead of playing disciplined and winning hockey. The Flyers would rather drop the gloves and have a highlight reel winger or centerman to light the lamp numerous times instead of cultivating a winning organization. They play the same way year after year after year.....only to come up empty year after year after year. They should have thrown a boatload of cash at New jersey's Lou Lamoriello years back to entice him to bring his magic to Philly. Granted the Flyers didn't and don't have a legend between the pipes like Brodeur but Lamoriello would have changed the attitude. Bobby Clarke & Co do not win in today's NHL (nor in the 2000s, the 1990s or the 1980s)...spirited effort in the '87 Finals but they only took the lead in one game. The question is......will it ever change in Philadelphia or will it be as nasty as the New York Rangers with taunts of "1975" after 50 years?

Ed Snider can't live forever. This organization needs to stop the promoting of every past Flyer into a coaching, management or scouting position. They refuse to study and learn from the winning organizations. They still think they can recover the magic of 40 years ago. First order of business is to steal one of Detroit's or NJ's scouts and make hime head of our scouting department. The Flyers haven't drafted an all-star defenseman in decades. Same with the goaltending position.

The goaltending has been the lone brightspot morons. I'm so sick of the no-nothing hockey fans. Bryz has been positionally sound and anticipating great..every goal has either been deflected or screened. Now, the real issues are the line combos and you could see it coming. Schenn looks lost on top line. get Voracek up there, and let Schenn go back to center or maybe a winger on Briere's line when he gets back along with Simmonds. Couturier belongs centering the 3rd line with talbot and Read. Laughton looks decent to stay if Rinaldo misses a few, and can center wellwood and fedotenko. Briere coming back will mak a huge difference IMO. Miss Jagr much? he's lighting it up already

Lavy is definitely the issue...been saying this after I gave him a year. He simply does not get his players ready to play a team style, esp defense. To run his style, you need fast dmen, not physical and slow. We have one puck moving dman and he is 37. Part of this falls on Homer and how Snider wants to win, but Lavy needs to adjust to what he has. It's like we have two different teams out there. I get the shortened season, but every team is on an even playing field. Lavy (and his style) is getting exposed right now.

At least the Rags are getting pummeled by the Pens. Lundy gives up 4 softies and gets yanked/benched in the 2nd period. Once again, the Rags are overhyped by the league, ESPN, etc.....what else is new?

same old flyers fans, if they win their awesome, if they lose they suck..how about the stupid reaction fans just go away, a hockey fan that knows the game can see that poor special teams did them in, they could easily be 2 and 0, and with the exception of the first periods outplayed both teams five on five. the power play and pk will improve, no training camp remember?

In contrast to IceDog's comments, the Flyers do in fact cultivate a winning organization. The Flyers enjoy the 2nd highest winning percentage in the league, only behind the Habs. The Flyers are perennial competitors and truly rarely miss the playoffs (5 straight years in the early 90's noted). Since 1975 they have made it to the Stanley Cup final 6 times, again only behind the Habs. They have just been unable to close the deal, although they really should have done so in 2010. I for one love the tough hockey philosophy - it is part of what defines the Flyers. Unfortunately, one of the consequences of the 'Bully" style is that there is an undoubted bias against the Flyers by many in the League, including some referees. That makes it so much sweeter when the Boys succeed. I look forward to the day when Giroux will hoist the Cup.

The good news is that the Flyers will be off the front sports page once the regular season is over at the end of April. They'll be going home and baseball will be where it belongs....the central focus of the sports section.

Seems to me Bryz is a mistake, problem is how at this stage of the game do you rectify it? You can't unload him with his contract unless you eat it. Looks like like a lost shortened season for the Flyers.

thank you orange fury, at least someone knows this sport and our history,,,,,and i'd like to add the flyers were screwed in 80, (leon stikle call) and would have won cups in 85 and 87 if they did not have to play a team sporting at least five hall of fame players.

So officials did not blow two legit goals by the Flyers? Not saying our PK is awesome but come on. Two brutal calls by refs resulted no goals. It'a not even a bad penalty call.

I wonder wth do you YOU about hockey?

Send Wellwood to the Phantoms, and bring up Tye McGinn for some greasy goals and help out Simmonds

I skipped all the BS to say this, Flyers lost, plain and simple. Yeah 2 bad calls today, but you know what, we had our chances. We need Danny B back in there. As far as the skate "kick" goal for Buff, the refs made right call, he was stopping. Tired of peoples excuses on here and giving up just because we are 0-2 in 2 days. Give em a break, let them play and we will see what everybodys saying later. GO FLYERS

Wellwood should be replaced by Tye McGinn to get some greasy goals and add somemore size to the Flyers' overall team. The defence is too slow, and Lavy is going to have to change his system.

As usual the refs blew it, Bryz still can't seem to steal a game, the PK sucks, and sad to say but the best player not named Giroux is only on the team for 5 games. In a 48 game season you can't afford to jerk around and throw away points like we always do. This weekend was a major FAIL.

The officiating is the same as it has been since the Flyer's entered the league. It is bad when the template for a player is the 1974 version NHL player. It is also disgusting watching the latest Kerry Frazier or Ard Skov as refs.

But I save my venom, as always for our two latest board trolls.

Is there irony in souless 2013, after 20 posts, telling a Philly poster he has "too much time"? But, the idiot Cindy Penqueen fan doesn't even know what irony is, so my words are lost on some acne scarred loser kid.

CentralPAman... who are you? Jerry Sandusky in Happy Valley? Do they give you posting privileges? As to the Devils, that rat trap playing group of bores, deserve banishment. How many people can Corey Booker put in the stands? If it weren't for Flyer fans, the stands would look like the Miami Marlins fans in single digits.

Hating all the negativity here, some of you like to just post so you can say to your three other non-hockey knowledge friends "man I told you so, they suck, bryz sucks" and I'm sure said the exact same stuff in 2010 when we barely made the playoffs(and throughout the playoffs) and went to the cup. 5/9 on the PK people. 1/9 on the PP. Bryzs fault? Lavys? Nope. Just gotta EXECUTE SPECIAL TEAMS and hopefully in the future blatant goals are given to them instead of taken away for so reason.
