Hartnell's hat trick not enough

POSTED: Sunday, January 22, 2012, 6:04 PM

One bone-rattling hit.

Two bitter rivals.

Three fights.

Four lead changes.

Five goals for the Flyers. One less than the Bruins.

Despite two soft goals in which the Flyers blew yet another lead, the Flyers overcame a 5-4 deficit in the final frame thanks to Max Talbot’s redirection with less than 10 minutes to play before falling, 6-5, in a shootout in one of the most entertaining games of the NHL season.

The Bruins are now 24-0-0 when leading by two or more goals in a game.

It was Scott Hartnell, though, who did his best to put a dent in that record. Hartnell scored three consecutive goals - all in the second period, to tie a team record for the most in one period of play - to record the Flyers’ first natural hat trick since Jeff Carter did it on Nov. 11, 2010. Hartnell singlehandedly took the Flyers from down 3-1 to leading 4-3 in a span of 16 minutes.

Hundreds of hats littered the ice at the Wells Fargo Center, as the 19,851 applauded Hartnell's incredible weekend with 5 goals in back-to-back games. Claude Giroux had the primary assist on all 3 of Hartnell's goals.

Sunday’s insanity started in the first 10 seconds, when Boston’s Chris Kelly was sprung on a breakaway off the opening draw.

Patrice Bergeron scored 40 seconds later on the next shift, as the Bruins - who are now 27-6-2 since Nov. 1 - implanted images of their last visit to Philadelphia, a 6-0 drubbing on Dec. 17, in the Flyers’ heads.

Then, Tom Sestito and Milan Lucic dropped the gloves to set the tone for what would be a Bloody Sunday. Brayden Schenn followed that by railroading Bruins defenseman Steven Kampfer just 9:37 into the game, when he caught Kampfer rushing the puck up the ice with his head down.

Schenn answered for his clean hit - with his hands and elbows down, and his skates grounded on the ice - by squaring off with Kelly near the benches.

Kampfer never returned to the ice, playing just 2:45 before leaving with an apparent concussion.

Before Schenn’s monstrous, Talbot importantly answered on the scoresheet for the Flyers just 41 seconds after Sestito’s fight. Unlike Dec. 17, the Flyers weren't going down without a fight.

Somehow, despite spending 4:24 of the first 9:01 of the first period down at least one man, the Flyers escaped the initial frame trailing just 2-1. And that’s when Hartnell took over.

Overall, the Flyers and Bruins combined for 68 minutes in penalties and countless blood lost. Old Time Hockey on a Sunday afternoon.

Hard fought game by the Flyers with their injuries and the 2 goals the ref giftwrapped the Bruins in the first. 2 words of advice to Lavy, first put Bob in for the shootout, I don't care how cold he is, have him start stretching when OT starts. #2 stop putting Simmonds as one of the shooters, maybe go with the hot hand Hartnell?

That's exactly what I feel! Bob can't be any worse in goal for the shootout since Bryz has not stopped a shot yet, according to Jackson!

Why does Lavy always choose to shoot first? Also, you have a hot shooter why wouldn't you go with him? Simmonds?

Can we please for the love of god make Bob the number one goaltender. Yea, you paid this guy lots of money but we need to win games and lot bite our nails every time the puck is near our goal. Also, im really confused at why you go with Matt Read, don't get me wrong I love this kid, but on a shootout when he is 0/1 in his life? Bryz needs to sit down, the only games he wins are the ones that the Flyers dont even let the puck near him.

Jim Jackson stated that Bryzgalov has not had a save in a shootout yet this year. Why then doesn't Lavy take him out and put in Bobrovsky for the shootout? And I don't want to hear that Bob wouldn't be ready coming off the bench. Anything would be better than a goalie who hasn't stopped one yet!

I was screened....It was deflected....It was a lucky bounce....I just need more time to build my confidence.

P.S. Avs 3 shoot out goals on 3 shots vs the sieve
Bruins 2 shoot out goals on 2 shots vs the sieve

    Yo Lavi! Play Bobrovsky!!

Love Simmonds, but he is a third line winger, he shouldn't be penalty shots but your (one time) 4th line center should be, Couturier has alot more skill, Harnell the hot hand. Bryz also didn't look well on the Lucic goal or the wraparound. I hate ragging on the guy, but he can't put together 2 good starts in a row.

Solid game by the Orange and Black! Boys wore their colors proud today!! Loved the line up, Shelly, Sestito, and Big Bad Schenn...!! Hard fought game, good job boys! Bryz let a couple softs in, and was Bryz in the shoot out, ( not a bad game, made some key saves, but maybe the wrong choice in net today ) other than that lots to be really happy about! In our building, players on the other team had to pay a price if they wanted the puck! Our boys made them pay! We deserved the Win.... just the one point, but regained some self respect after the last blow out.

I don't know what you Bryz-haters are talking about, those two shootout goals were clearly the defense' fault. They just let them come right in and left Bryz out to dry!

Very good hockey game, don't blame Bryz again as Gustavsson failed to clear the crease on the Bruins' go-ahead goal. Otherwise he held the fort. Offensive-minded Flyboys without Prongs, Jags, JVR and Briere (!) looked so much better than in the last game against the Stanley Cup-defending champs but sadly lost again despite a wholehearted effort. Sestito was a good call-up, just as some on this board suggested. Harts was superb and G is picking it up again. No sweep again this offseason!!

This just has to stop... the insanity of playing Brzy is just killing everyone.

Including the hometown crowd. I counted 3 Bronx cheers.

The team has to be whispering under their breath for a switch, but doesn't want to tick off their ultimate boss Ed (yes, Ed Synder, not Mr. Synder... why does everyone still call him Mr.?)

He Ed... swallow your ego and play the better goalie.

Not only is he 0 for whatever in shootouts, but he once again gave up 2 soft goals.

A couple softies....other than that, lots to be real happy about! Good line up! Sestito. Shelly, and who would have know...Schenn! Made the Bruins pay a price for touching the puck! Boys wore their Orange & Black Proud tonight! Backed each other up, and played Flyer hockey! Real exciting game to watch! We deserved the 2 points, but we'll take one and take back some of the pride we gave away the last time we played these Clowns!

Okay everybody knows two things 1st the Bryz is not in a slump, he is simply a highly over paid guy who can't stop the puck, shootout or not. 2nd playing a physically punishing game works. Make the visitors pay with this type of game and put the Bob in and keep him in. We have nothing to lose at this point. Somebody please pass this on to Lavatory!

I don't think Ed cares who much they are playing Bryz, he wants to win. Pre-cap he had no problem throwing out whatever money necessary. This is Lavy trying to get Bryz right before playoff time. I would expect with about 15-20 games left, if nothing changes then Bob will be taking over for the playoff run. Although Bob has been clearly better, he has given up his share of softies just not at a 2 per game clip.

That game - especially the second period - is exactly how they got to play Boston and New York. They hit everything that moved. Schenn had his best game. Not concerned at all about the SO loss, but man, Bryz your dead to me. A great goalie would have shut them down in the 3rd, 4-3.

I'm all for giving a guy a chance, but I think Homer and Lavy have to eat a little crow, and admit they made a supreme blunder with this goaltender. Brzy needs to be sent down to the Phantoms and get his head and confidence back. Disheartening seeing the team play as they did and can't come up with a win.

Can't send him down, trade him or release him unless he agrees, and I doubt he will. Although I agree a trip to the Phantoms is about all they have left to try, he has to sign off on it.

With his NMC in his contract all they can do is waive him, and considering how much they're paying him I just don't see that happening, despite how much I want this sieve off my team. He couldn't stop a beach ball in a shootout.

Hello People, was I watching a different game today. Bryz was downright pathetic. Again, worst guy today was the one with the 51 million dollar contract. 2 soft goals .... please. At least 3 and he put one in on himself. This guy is not even worth minimum wage. Here's an idea for Holmgen .. It is clear that Ryan Miller does not want to play for the Buffalo Sabres after no one on the Buffalo team stood up for him after that hit he took in the Boston game. So, trade Bryz straight up for Ryan Miller. Don't see a downside here. Sabres are ripe to trade Miller and give them the sieve in return. Bob has proven that he can stop breakaways, so why after the sieve gives up all these softies. do you not put BOB into goal for the shootout. My son told me as soon as the shootout was to begin that Bryz wouldn't save 1 shot. The kid is 12 and smarter than Sneider who signed this joke. Eat your money Snider and get him out of Philly now. He lost this game for the Flyers. They never should have lost this game. Give BOB time and he will be great in the near future. I know that if BOB waas in the net today, they win this game. Sorry Snipes, BOB would have won this game for the Flyers. Hell, any other goalie would havce won this game for the Flyers. It's a shame that they played so well as a team (minus all their injuries) and did not get the win. This is the time a franchise goalie should stand out and take a game like this. If Bryz couldn't do it in a game like today, I feel he cannot do it in the playoffs. Get Miller and trade Bryz to Buffalo. Their owner has pleanty of $$$ and may take over his ridiculous contract. Keep your heads up Flyers, you played a good game today. Too bad you were playing it today with an open net.

I'm sure Buffalo just can't wait to trade their stud goalie for a bad one who is more expensive who happens to have a no movement clause and can't be traded anyway unless he agrees. I dunno if this is a troll or just ravings, but Bryz is here to stay unless the CBA changes to allow buyouts.

What kind of article is this? It is half done. Nothing about the third period or OT?

What is this: "Before Schenn’s monstrous, Talbot importantly answered on the scoresheet for the Flyers just 41 seconds after Sestito’s fight. Unlike Dec. 17, the Flyers weren't going down without a fight."?

Is there an editor there anymore?

You mail in a half completed article just to get people to read and comment and get hits for the advertisement. What a joke.

The only surprize in this game was that it took Boston almost 45 minutes to score their 5th goal against "soft Bryz". I think it took them 25mins last time. Of course none of the goals were his fault though. Excuse #1. No Pronger on defense. #2. Defelctions. #3. Screen shots. You guys know all the rest already just as well as I do. It finally sounds as if you guys (and gals) are just as pissed off as me also. Bryz is totally worthless!! Im tired reading about all the excuses his apoligists print after every shelling. Lavy doesnt like using the terms #1 & #2 goalie. Maybe one of these writers who actually speak to coach Lavy every week should ask him about the number 36. Because that is how many goaltenders in the NHL are better then " soft brzy", which includes every single starting goalie and every backup goalie that has played the minimum amount of games to be ranked. When fans have zero confidence in Bryz doesnt it make you wonder just how much ( or should I say little) confindence his teamates have in him. I like to believe that Bryz would be in the AHL already if not for his foolish No Movement Clause to go along with his even dumber contract. The fact that Bobrovsky is so much better in every possible way and yet sits on the bench makes me wonder, WHY!!!. Im simply tired of having soft bryz shoved down my throat!! How many times during a game do you say to yourself " WTF, I could have saved that shot, my sister could have saved that shot, ect)." The fact Bobs hasnt already been made the number 1 goalie (sorry Lavy) makes me believe he simply never well be. We are stuck with Bryz and a 5th rnd playoff seeding and a 1st exit. Why, I dont know. For reasons they are not telling us Bryz well remain the top goalie regardless. To add insult to injury all the Flyers reporters well talk about is how different things could have been if not for #1. Pronger, #2. Deflections. Ect ect.

..... I'm trying hard to swallow after this galling loss. The Bruins did their part to help the Flyers with penalties. Short Jagr, even JVR the second rate second choice in 2007 can help, but when you see Bryzgalov, know you have to score seven goals, as Mr. Softie and his conehead are worse than a sieve.Bryz, didn't want to talk to reporters, so, can we ignore him? Lavvy shouldn't turn into Charlie Manuel and play older favorites. The kids have the grit. START "BOB" until he proves unready or Bryz comes around.

If after 9.5 years of playing in the NHL if soft bryz isnt ready then he shouldnt be playing at all!! Pressure?? Pressure?? If soft bryz reminds me of anything while playing net it is of a man who doesnt have a care in the world. Footloose and francy free almost come to mind watching him play. But pressure, nop. Its time for soft bryz to join Blair Bletts as players no longer part of the Flyers daily operations. There just arent enough excuses for old softy anymore. Its not the defense, nor the deflections. At what point is this man forced to be accountable for his actions (or lack there of ). Saddly it is evident that Bryz well never be held to account for any of actionss while Philly. Lavy well Fiddle as Flyers Burn!!

first let me say that unfortunetly an nhl coach will never put the backup goalie in for the shootout unless the starter is injured, it's just another one of those respect codes. but also let me say, it is clear that bryzgolov is not the answer. i don't know if homer scouted him much or not, i didn't see him play often in the other conference. but this guy is not quick down low, gives up huge rebounds more often than not, and just doesn't look like a goalie that can get hot through a playoff run. i hate to say it, but without pronger, and jagr getting injury prone with age i don't see a cup this year either.

Didn't their scouts even watch this guy play? How can a supposed top 5 goalie the last couple years just all of a sudden suck? I've never seen anything like it. He plays with no emotion or intensity, which translates to lazy and slow movements, always is out of position, goes down way to much and on breakaways he's already back in the net before the guy shoots.. Come out and challenge the shooter, maybe a poke check? What the hell are our coaches doing?...Nothing!!

Great game aside from 2 horrible goals and the unwinnable shootout. At this point, they should just sign the fatest guy in philly...there's certainly plenty to choose from, and stuff him between the pipes...he's gotta make at least 1 save in a shootout or from a deflection. And stop playing Bryz back to back. Not even good goalies are good in those situations. Keep Sestito up. Schenn finally his first good game. And unfortunatley, we ain't going anywhere again with these goalies...shame

Why does it seem that Jim Jackson and crew always cover for Bryz? They say oh it was deflected, screened or he didn't have a chance. Its never because hmmm maybe he sucks? And you can't blame the defense all the time. Big time goalies are paid big time money to make save the butts of lousy defense on occasion. Bob seems to be able to handle more deflections, screens and whatever comes his way better than Bryz. Bob needs to make more starts and against playoff caliber teams like Boston/Jersey/Rangers so he's better suited against them come playoff time.

Homer needs to find out what it will cost to obtain Ryan Miller. Put Bryz on waivers then send him to the AHL after he clears waivers. Miller needs a change of scenery and Flyers aren't going anywhere with Bryz. Flyers have a really good team and could go far in the playoffs but won't go anywhere with this wacko that Lavy is being forced to play. Make the call Homer.

Shootout Losses don't mean anything to me. This game was a tie, and the Flyers stood up to the Bruins in what was the most exciting hickey game of the season so far. Sestito, Schenn, Shelley and Hartnell all made this a memorable game. Old Time Hockey lives and games like this should happen more frequently.

Remember this statement when we miss the play offs by 1 point. Every single game at every point of the season is a must win. Especially this year where the standings can be drastically altered by what happens in a weekend...

You know if I performed my job as bad as Brzy does, I'd be fired. Moral of the story? QUIT OVER PAYING ATHLETES FOR WHAT THEY'VE DONE AND NOT WHAT THEY ARE DOING !

Flyers can beat up on the bad teams. and will lose to good teams. No chance of advancing in the playoffs. I understand you homers want your team to win, but objectively they are a mediocre team, maybe next year if they get rid of Bryz and sign a good defenseman,

I like Chris Therien, but I almost drove off the road when he started talking about "Flyers should be proud" and "They gave it all they had." What I'd like to hear from my analyst is some talk about how confident can the team be when their goalie hasn't stopped a shootout attempt all season. I stopped counting moral victories when I was 12. The fact is that the Rangers beat the Bruins yesterday, and we lost a point today, and the rest of the division is not as far behind the Flyers as people may think. Bryz is killing this team. More soft goals today. When was the last time he stole a win?

Its about time Lavy left his skirt and purse at home and dressed some toughness. Best Flyers game of the year. Sestito is awesome. Him and Shelley or him and Rinaldo BOTH need to be dressed EVERY game. I'll sacrifice Harry Z. Today was finally Flyers hockey.

Lavy's coaching decisions are Manuelesque at times. His handling of goalies, and his selections during shootouts. I feel like Lavy is a great x's and o's guy, but lacks something. Thought that especially watching 24/7.

Wouldn't it be nice for once in my hockey fan life (fan since Flyers acquired Lindros in early 90's)that we could have 1 stinkin season with a number 1 solid goalie all the way thru a season? For pete's sake! Every stinkin year we have this issue.

At this point the Flyers have to consider what their options are w/ Bryz. Can they waive him? Trade him (who would take him)?
    Demote him to minors?
This season the Flyers have shown grit. And we all enjoy their youth playing so well. But there will be no cup this year. So knowing that, what is best option to get another goaltender?

"Despite two soft goals in which the Flyers blew yet another lead"? "two soft goals in which" just can't be right. That would have been redlined by my 10th grade English teacher.
