Van Riemsdyk signs 6-year, $25M deal

POSTED: Tuesday, August 30, 2011, 1:40 PM

The Flyers are not just hoping that James van Riemsdyk’s playoff success carries over into the upcoming regular season - they’re now banking on it.

The Flyers and van Riemsdyk agreed to a 6-year, $25.5 million contract extension on Tuesday, as he reported on his Twitter feed.

Van Riemsdyk, 22, netted 21 goals last year in his sophomore season with the Flyers, in which he earned $1.6 million including bonuses. He was set to become a restricted free agent after this season.

His new deal will pay him $4.25 million per season through 2017-18 - more than the $3.75 million that Claude Giroux will earn for each of the next three seasons.

Giroux, 23, led the Flyers with 76 points, including 25 goals and 51 assists. Van Riemsdyk was 8th in team scoring with 40 points (21 goals and 19 assists). Van Riemsdyk, who added 7 goals in 11 playoff games, was the Flyers' No. 2 overall pick in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.

On his Twitter feed, Van Riemsdyk wrote: Want to thank mr snider and flyers management for treating me well and showing confidence in me #firstclassorganization

Hard to compare the two contracts, Giroux's contract is a flat-out steal. I'm surprised the police aren't involved in what Giroux is getting paid compared to comparable players around the league. That said, huge vote of confidence in JVR. 4.25 could end up being a steal in itself if this kid develops to expectations.

I gotta think Giroux cannot be pleased to be outdone by a kid who had one good playoff run. Grioux is a much better player and should be the higher paid player. I am glad we locked up JVR, as he was a real stud in the playoffs, but wonder if this impacts the locker room?

Holmgren was quoted as saying "We think JVR is a big part of our core and our future and Mr. Snider, Mr. Luukko and I look forward to giving up on him and trading him within the next two years, ideally for someone unproven, much older and less skilled."

When asked about Giroux, the Flyers GM said "We really look forward to signing Claude to a long term deal so that I can start shopping him to other teams."

Hopefully JVR and Giroux will be more serious about their careers! Signing a long term deal never works if you just take the money and won't do what is asked of you. Carts and Richie as you say, had their chance, and refused to do more. Carts will always get you in the playoffs, but surely takes you out by how plays. Richards just doesn't get the communication factor with his team, coaches and staff.Probably not his fault they made him captain, just wasn't ready.

Carter and Richards were "me first" players. JVR and Giroux are better team guys and more active in the community. Don't know how people compare them to the departed. Night and day...

I'm good with it ... if Claude is good with it.

I know they're on top of all of the cap numbers and have this planned out in conjunction with future new and expiring contracts. I just can't get excited about it, because excited is how I felt a couple of years ago when they established Richards and Carter and as the core of the team for years to come.

I like JVR and he has tons of POTENTAIL. But this figure is ridiculously high after one good year and a total slap in the face to Giroux. This teams continues to baffle me.

Good deal. Giroux signed his contract in a totally different NHL market. He'll get his money, don't worry. @hockeyfan00: Richards was a "me first" player?...how come he led his team in assists for the past 5 years?...if anything, he didn't shoot enough? me first?..couldn't be more wrong about that one.

thats perfect...sign guys that are going to score in the PLAYOFFS when it matters. unlike mr regular season all star Jeff Carter. Finally flyers management is getting it together. i like this year's team a lot.

phront runner what he means by "me-first" is the hard partying and seeming to not care when we lost in the playoffs because it was beach season. I saw this a lot if Jeff Carter, but not Richards. Check Carter's playoff numbers they're horrid. Good riddance to him

I'm not so sure that this contract is as much a commentary on how the organization feels about Giroux as much as its a statement about where they see JVR and his future with the team. I think they project him as the team captain in the future, and judging by his comments when Richie was traded, he sees himself much the same way.
