The Flyers are not just hoping that James van Riemsdyk’s playoff success carries over into the upcoming regular season - they’re now banking on it.

The Flyers and van Riemsdyk agreed to a 6-year, $25.5 million contract extension on Tuesday, as he reported on his Twitter feed.

Van Riemsdyk, 22, netted 21 goals last year in his sophomore season with the Flyers, in which he earned $1.6 million including bonuses. He was set to become a restricted free agent after this season.

His new deal will pay him $4.25 million per season through 2017-18 - more than the $3.75 million that Claude Giroux will earn for each of the next three seasons.

Giroux, 23, led the Flyers with 76 points, including 25 goals and 51 assists. Van Riemsdyk was 8th in team scoring with 40 points (21 goals and 19 assists). Van Riemsdyk, who added 7 goals in 11 playoff games, was the Flyers' No. 2 overall pick in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.

On his Twitter feed, Van Riemsdyk wrote: Want to thank mr snider and flyers management for treating me well and showing confidence in me #firstclassorganization

Great for JVR, but man, what a slap in the face to Giroux. And I know this doesn't effect this year's cap, but something's gotta give this year because there's no cap space left. So who's moving? At this point I wouldn't be surprised if Pronger or Briere gets traded. here comes the new youth movement...

I'm that contract wont go into affect until next season. I don't think it will have any bearing on this years cap #.

If only I could speak English I would have written....
I'm sure that this contract wont go into affect until next season. He still has this year on his current contract. Homer is just doing some chores now so he doesn't have to do them next June. I don't think it will have any bearing on this years cap #.

Nevermind, Pronger and Briere have NMC's... maybe Carle, Coburn, or Meszaros, then.

This contract has potential to become Lupul #2. I would rather give him Giroux or Logan Couture type of deals.
JVR looked great in playoffs but come on 4.25M a year? Seems like a lot of money for a player that did not score over 40pts yet.

As Richie and Carts will tell you: Signing a long-term contract with the Flyers means you're about to be traded soon...:)

Right you are Spence. I think this deal is good anyway. Giroux is already signed for the next 3 seasons. Couturier will likely not be ready this season and Carle will like come off the books next year anyway.... everything is fine.

@lookyhere Next year we will have 16 players under contract with $13,036,071 in cap space. I think we will be fine.

Giroux will get his on the next contract (2 years). They are both so young, let's hope Flyers keep these 2 and not jettison them like other duos.

The Giroux contract will be up before we know it and he will get his big deal then. With the way the cap is rising, this deal is good for the Flyers. Even if he only becomes about a 70 point scorer max. Look at what Leino got

I will take this any day of the week, after this year he will be getting the same cap hit as Hartnell, he is a vast improvement on Hartnell because he stays on his skates, and he scores naturally, as opposed to the cherry-picking that Hartnell does.
