Update Playoff Odds

With just 14 games remaining after this weekend plays out for the Flyers, the NHL playoff scenarios will become a little more complete with each day’s slate.

For the Flyers, not too much has changed since last week’s update.

If the playoffs started today, the first round matchups would be:

(8) Boston at (1) Washington
(7) Montreal at (2) Pittsburgh
(6) Philadelphia at (3) Buffalo
(5) Ottawa at (6) New Jersey

Washington clinched the Southeast division title on Thursday night.

With that, here are the Flyers’ updated odds for playoff spots, thanks to PlayoffStatus.com:

3% chance for 4th place
27% chance for 5th place
42% chance for 6th place
18% chance for 7th place
7% chance for 8th place

3% chance to not make the playoffs.

The good news for the Flyers is that the top eight teams have continued to separate themselves from the bottom feeders. Sunday’s opponent, the Rangers, hold just a 22% chance to make the playoffs.

New York enters tonight’s games a full five points back of 8th place Boston and seven points behind the Flyers.

The bad news for the Flyers is that the Canadiens and Bruins, who were four points back earlier this week, have caught up. Montreal is tied with the Flyers and Boston, thanks to Thursday’s 5-1 thumping, are only two behind.

Tomorrow’s opponent, Chicago, holds an eight point cushion on second place in the strong Western Conference. PlayoffStatus.com gives the Blackhawks a 20% shot to win the Stanley Cup in June.

That’s pretty impressive.

Two losses for the Flyers this weekend – including Sunday’s game in New York – could really shift the Eastern Conference picture.
