Kimmo Timonen has yet to be examined by doctors, according to the Flyers, but you can likely expect him to break his 223-game ironman streak this weekend.
That’s because the Flyers put defenseman Matt Walker on waivers on Friday.
Walker, 31, has played just 1 game since clearing waivers on Dec. 3. The 29 other teams would have until 12 noon on Saturday to put in a claim for Walker, who carries another $1.7 million salary cap hit next season.
Putting Walker on waivers does not mean that he would not be eligible to play this weekend in the Flyers’ home-and-home series against Ottawa, it would simply give the Flyers the flexibility to send him to AHL Adirondack and re-call Erik Gustafsson in his place.
Since the Flyers are at the 23-man maximum, the Flyers would need to send one player to the Phantoms in order to re-call Gustafsson. Walker required waivers since he was on the NHL roster for more than 30 days.
Gustafsson, 23, played 5 games for the Flyers this season before requiring wrist surgery on Nov. 10.
Conveniently, Gustafsson is already in town and eligible to play in Friday's AHL Outdoor Classic against Hershey at Citizens Bank Park.
