Talbot, Lilja out vs. Penguins

Just as it appeared the Flyers were turning the corner in the injury department this week... two more players went down on Saturday in Boston.

Defenseman Andreas Lilja and forward Max Talbot will miss Sunday's contest against Pittsburgh due to injury. According to Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren, both players are day-to-day.

Rookie Brandon Manning was re-called from Adirondack to replace Lilja. Manning, 21, played 3 games for the Flyers last week after making his NHL debut on March 8.

Jody Shelley will replace Talbot. It will be Shelley's first game in a week.

Lilja, who had played well in 8 games since returning to the lineup, took an deflected puck in the neck in the first period of Saturday's shootout loss. Lilja suffered a throat injury on the play. He immediately skated off the ice and went to the locker room.

Since the point shot was deflected, Lilja was unsuspecting and did not have a chance to bat the puck away from himself.

Talbot's injury is a little less clear. It is believed Talbot has a right shoulder injury, most apparent from his second period fight with Johnny Boychuk in which he fell to the ice awkwardly. The Flyers are calling it an "upper-body" injury. It is possible Talbot, too, that Talbot did not first suffer the injury during the fight. He also skipped Thursday's morning skate on Long Island to rest.

Defensemen Pavel Kubina (upper-body) and Andrej Meszaros (lower-body) remain sidelined with their injuries. Kubina has been out since March 8 and Meszaros has sat since March 4, though both players remain "day-to-day" according to the Flyers.

The Penguins carry an 11-game winning streak into Sunday afternoon's matchup. Aside from Sidney Crosby and Roxborough native Eric Tangradi in their lineup, the Penguins also have defenseman Kris Letang back, who may be more vital to the Pittsburgh's success than Crosby.
