Surgery for Meszaros; Coburn out indefinitely
The Flyers’ already struggling blue line took a major hit on Friday, as the club announced lengthy injuries to both Andrej Meszaros and Braydon Coburn.
Meszaros, 27, will undergo surgery on April 2 to repair a torn left rotator cuff. The Flyers said Meszaros will be out indefinitely, but for all intents and purposes, his season is over. The Flyers’ last game is on April 27.
Meszaros already missed 19 games this season with a left shoulder injury. He had surgery in 2009 on the same shoulder to repair a torn labrum. It’s certainly fair to wonder whether his shoulder (and body) will be able to handle the rigors of an NHL season.
Meszaros has played only 72 games over the last two seasons. He has one season (salary $5 million) remaining on his 6-year, $24 million deal.
Coburn, 28, has been one of the Flyers’ most durable players. He is also out indefinitely with a left shoulder separation. Coburn was crunched on the boards with about 7:30 remaining in the second period of Thursday night’s game against the Islanders.
Coburn was one of six Flyers to play in all 33 games this season. Also the longest-tenured Flyer, Coburn has missed only eight games since joining the team via trade in Feb. 2007.
Denmark native and 6-foot-6 defenseman Oliver Lauridsen will make his NHL debut on Saturday against Boston.
The status for the Flyers’ other two injured players – Danny Briere (concussion) and Nick Grossmann (upper-body) – remains the same. Grossmann is day-to-day and Briere is out indefinitely, as well.
The Flyers have a staggering $26.24 million worth of players on the injury list, including Coburn, Briere, Meszaros, Grossmann, Chris Pronger, Jody Shelley and Matt Walker.

Draft lottery, April 29. Third most ping pong balls. If the season ended now, I believe they'd be drafting no worse than fourth. Now don't go screwing up by winning a bunch of meaningless games. sklandog

Why does Holmgren still have a job?
Thank god this was an abbreviated season..... Mike Boryla
I'm afraid Mesz is done. This is the third time he injured his left shoulder and both the last two injuries occurred on completely harmless plays. I feel sorry for this guy, when healthy he played really well for us. I am wondering why Coburn has regressed so much recently. It seems he has already reached or rather exceeded his full potential, and now his durability is also in question. Very bad news. flyerdommo
