Hartnell choked; Subban responds to Richards
P.K. Subban seemed to be at the center of every battle last night in the Flyers’ 3-0 shutout loss at the Bell Centre.
Subban, 21 and the Canadiens’ fan-favorite rookie defenseman, didn’t shy away from running his mouth during the chippy third period that saw three players leave the game with 10-minute misconducts.
He was involved in nearly every trash-talking session before being thrown to the ice by the normally mild-mannered Sean O’Donnell in the third period. O'Donnell was tossed after the altercation - and Subban never dropped the gloves.
Flyers captain Mike Richards sounded off on Subban after the game.
In hockey, if you're going to throw verbal 'bows, you better be willing to thrown down.
“He's come in the league and hasn't earned respect,” Richards said, according to audio played on the Team 990 in Montreal this morning, as transcribed by BroadStreetHockey.com. “It's just frustrating to see a young guy like that come in here and so much as think that he's better than a lot of people.
“You have to earn respect in this league. It takes a lot. You can't just come in here as a rookie and play like that. It's not the way to get respect from other players around the league and hopefully someone on their team addresses it, because I'm not saying I'm going to do it but something might happen to him if he continues to be that cocky.”
And Subban didn’t shy away from comment after Canadiens practice today in Montreal, once he heard Richards’ post-game comments. He seemed to be perplexed as to Richards’ issue.
“I’m not the only person who’s confident when I play the game,” Subban told ESPN.com’s Pierre LeBrun. “Maybe the fact that I’m a young guy coming in, that maybe people don’t take too well to that. As long as my teammates and the coaching staff are happy with what I’m doing, I’m going to continue to do that.”
The last time Richards called out someone in the media, Pittsburgh’s Matt Cooke, the two fought just 6 seconds into their next game. Previously, Florida’s David Booth trashed Richards in the media for his vicious hit that sent Booth to the hospital and cost him most of last season. Richards and Booth also squared off in Booth’s next contest against the Flyers to settle that score.
By the way, in case you were wondering, P.K. stands for Parnell Karl.
Meanwhile, The Score in Canada picked up on why Scott Hartnell was so incensed in the third period after a scrum.
Hartnell was apparently choked, on the ice, while wrestling with Maxim Lapierre. Video and audio of the incident are below.
With the Flyers and Canadiens facing off again on Monday night at the Wells Fargo Center in a battle between the two division leaders, it’s safe to say we won’t have to wait long until Richards or Subban makes the next move.

no, the habs fans didn't burn the city after the win yesterday. But, I will send a question of my own...Did the Flyers fans went showing off their ''goon city'' flags out all over the city after the game last night? Ahhh, good old goon hockey I hear them say with joy... bombadil
Nop burning the Flyers was enough.... Hi hi hi... that's a good one... But you should note that most of the people arrested after the riot last spring were not hockey fan... We are just to soft in Montreal with them... Won't probably happen in other place were they could get shot by the Police.... Ghislain
Who cares about PK Subban. He's an overrated player, much the team he plays for camtheman
Well I will say that today all Philadelphia fans care about Subban :) Ghislain
For those who thinks that Subban has all the worst defaults of the word beacause he's a ''Frenchie''... He doesn't speak a word of French... He's from Ontario... In fact, the Flyers have more ''Frenchie'' than the habs... Gagné, Brière, Giroux.... Ghislain
Hey Canadien's fans, I watched the game last night. It appeared to me once you went up 3-0 you got all cocky. It was just a regular season game. Come playoff time , you'll choke as usual. And don't bother to throw in comments about your 28 Cups, the deck was stacked for the first 50 years with you having first rights to the best French Canadien talent & there were only six teams in the league. Can't wait 'til next Monday! philadavephia
Hey Ghislain--Gagne's not on the team anymore; get your facts straight before you mouth off like the idiot you are. Tell me where your beloved PK was during round 3 of the playoffs last year? Seems to me he was as nonexistent as the rest of your team. Same deal this year--overrated, can't play when it matters.
Cammalleri's decent, though. Do you guys plan on pulling Price as the start right now, or do you think Martin will just wait until the playoffs start? MaC130
Ouu...Mac130 is very mad, poor him... like yesterday after the game?
Your right for Gagné but not for the idiot part :) I never insulted you by the way... Insulting people is for week people... I don't need this... Ghislain
@MaC130 Price will be the starter in the playoffs. I like our chances better than Bobrovsky the Russian you guys picked behind a tree somwhere in Siberia. You guys stink at getting decent goaltending. Get a good Canadian goaltender...and I'm not talking about Leighton mtlchfan
Hopefully Monday's effort is a helluva lot better effort than last night's embarrassment! flyers1313
Montreal doesn't have the depth to beat Philly in a series. So, I wouldn't worry about 1 game.

@zbot... you are probably right but having fun after 1 game is good :)
Maybe, it will be your turn on Monday? Ghislain
I must say that a lot of these comments are amusing. 1st off the Flyers were on the back end of back to back games while the Frogs were fresh. 2nd Subban is punk kid who has yet to even try and earn his trash talking stripes. If you are going to yap you better be prepared to back it up. Even a chuckle head like Avery will back up his trash. It is the NHL and Subban needs to put on his big boy pants and man up or shut up. Toeka
Wow Philadelphia didn't steel their reputation of trashy hockey... nobody's talking about real hockey talent like Subban... but only about talking and fighting... Ghislain
really boston strangler? how big where the other guys 12 ft tall 400 lbs? bdawkisgod
