Seravalli: What do Flyers do next?

POSTED: Friday, December 16, 2011, 1:22 AM

Video: The Daily News' Frank Seravalli discusses Chris Pronger's season-ending concussion and how the Flyers are dealing with the loss.

More game notes from Montreal:

THE MONEY SHOT: Andrej Meszaros recorded his second game-winning-goal of the year. He now has 11 goals since joining the Flyers in 2010 and 4 of them have been game-winners. Over the course of his NHL career, 9 of Meszaros’s 45 goals (20 percent) have been game-winning goals.

WHERE'D YOU GO? Canadiens forward Louis LeBlanc netted his first career NHL goal in the second period. After that, he played a total of just 69 seconds, with 1 shift in the entire 3rd period.

THREE APPLES: Matt Carle had 3 assists. It’s his first three-point game since Jan. 7, 2010 (1G, 2A at PIT) and his first 3-assist game since he posted 4 assists vs. Washington on Oct. 6, 2009.

POWER OUTAGE: The Flyers' win over Montreal certainly wasn't decided by the officials. The two teams combined to go 1-for-15 on the power play, including the Flyers' 0-for-6 effort. On the flip side, the Flyers had 3 key penalty kills: one in the final 2 minutes to seal the game, and 2 separate 5-on-3 advantages that lasted a total of 2 minutes.

EVER WONDER... Why so many Canadiens players wear strange jersey numbers? LeBlanc wears No. 71. Erik Cole wears No. 72. Hal Gill dons No. 75. In all, 12 players the Canadiens' roster have a number higher than 40. That's because the Canadiens have 17 retired numbers. That means every number from 1 through 10 is taken with the exception of 6 and 8. A total of 12 of the first 20 numbers have been worn by an all-time great, leaving many players to reverse their normal number (e.g. 27 to 72).

I don't know Frank. We all know what happens when you roll into the playoffs with 2 d pairs. I can assure you that Homer is looking right now for another top D man. Hopefully it only costs us a pick and a prospect. When Gus comes back he'll go in, Marshall and MAB will go back to New York and Lilja will be the 7th. That's my (hope) thought anyway.

Pronger's salary comes off the cap and should free up the necessary cash to sign Bryan McCabe,.....pronger's on-ice presence in the playoffs and the way he can "play" the officials is going to be sorely missed and may open up our younger guys for alot more abuse from the opposition,....Pronger put a stop to all that stuff just by being there on his normal shift and that kind of presence is just invaluable,.....McCabe might be able to fill some of that void

Get well Prongs, defintely a huge loss. Make Kimmo the captain and quite sure Homer has something up his sleeve. I would also make Talbot an assistant captain. he seems to have alot of respect amongst the guys already. i'm not giving up on this season. We have the best record in the league. Let's go Flyers!

Wait until the trade deadline and lift someone like Isles Mark Streit off some team going nowhere.

Go get Luca back...Ducks are struggling...nows the time. Gustafsson and a 2nd rounder should do it.

At least we won't be subject to his immature puck stealing at the end of games.

Coincidence that he was diaognosed at the University of Pittsburgh? Guess since the Pens lost Crosby they had to take our guy out of the line up? Conspiracy? Hope you get better soon Prongs we really need your leadership out there!

He started at the Daily News as an intern writing about the boozing legends of the Lincoln Financial Field lots
I guess this is all you need to be a reporter these days.

I remember when jersey numbers were as follows: goalies wore 1, 30. defensemen wore 2-6, 25-29, forwards wore 7-24. And few wore helmets and masks. Old time hockey.

Why would you bash Frank Seravalli? He's head and shoulders the best hockey writer in Philly these days.

I remember the Flyers having their own policy against higher numbers until they signed Lindros.

Pronger is cooked. 38 years old and suffering from post concussion syndrome should be the end for him, if he was smart. Go ask Keith Primeau or Lindros what can happen. Use that cap space/cash to make Nashville an offer they can't refuse for Weber.

Whatever you do, Flyers, don't give up speed for a stay-at-home defender. Since he got here, this coach has been looking for the speed to take time away from the other team and to buy time for his own team. Lavvy knows that controlling time is the name of the game today -- time and the vicious hits caused by the absence of clutching through the neutral zone (Power = Speed X Force). The rookies have all bought into Lavvy's system to such an extent, other teams are going to begin to dread going up against the constant assault. We may not be the biggest, but we probably challenge for the head of the class when it comes to speed. The only team that is unfazed by speed is the Bruins, because they have speed AND size. That's where Pronger will be really missed. But please, Holmgren, don't give up anyone who has brought quickness to the Flyers this year for an old-school defenseman.

Today, the Bruins will want to feed like spoiled pippies just by hovering around the net, without Pronger. Stick to the game plan, Flyers: fast breakouts, make those forwards work like dogs, own Period 3.

We need a tough guy on defence like a Brian Allen. We already have 4 guys that move the puck well coming out of the zone. Coburn and Mezaros play physical on ocasion, but we need someone with SNARL and who the opposing team is hesitant about because they never know what he might do, maybe even Suton ?? Nevermind the score, the way the Bruins manhandled the team yesterday was brutal, I mean come on FLYERS. The oldtimers must have been cringing.
