Richards among 5 Flyers needing surgery
Flyers captain Mike Richards will need surgery on his injured wrist, general manager Paul Holmgren told reporters during his end-of-season news conference.
Holmgren said Richards has been bothered by a torn ligament since training camp.
Richards was not available to speak to the media Monday. Richards was at the practice facility briefly before leaving for a doctor’s appointment.
Other surgeries for the Flyers that Holmgren announced:
Kris Versteeg - stomach lining
Michael Leighton - hip
Blair Betts - finger
Andrej Meszaros - wrist
Scott Hartnell and Jeff Carter might need hip surgery.
The Flyers are still not sure about surgery for Chris Pronger.

since training camp?? not sure I believe that one... recoveryroad
All of this sounds very myserious. Are they trying to create excuses for the failure of the entire team? Of what nature is his injury and how did it affect his play? Wouldn't it have been wiser to let it heal compeletely before putting him back on the ice? flyerdommo
"Guy has no heart and isn't a leader." Typical flunky Flyers Fans. People all over the league respect the guy and think he is one of the better captains in the league. Wish he and a few other guys would spend some time this offseason practicing little things like faceoffs but other than that this guy has been a Selke candidate and played with Toews on Team Canada to be arguably their most consistent line. I have to wonder why an injury that started in training camp wasn't fixed throughout the season at some point but what do I know...hope he and Laviolette can find something to agree on becasue the Flyers need both guys to win a championship. f_ckthepens
didn't realize an injured wrist affected you ability to buy into what the coach is selling and lead your team....i don't want him to be traded, but an attitude adjustment sure would be nice. kdub13
Agree. Richards is 100% solid. Look at the wingers he had this year. Everyone seems to conveniently forget that he had Gags last season and it was that line demolished the B's - and was playing very well versus the Habs. This year he has a rotating crew of Zherdev, Nodl, Carcillo, Versteeg- essentially 4th line wingers. Folks- you need to look at the COACH...........he lost the team. Trust me. Northcountry
The great captains of the Flyers' past (think Clarke, Primeau)ALSO led on the ice with their play. They basically would come out and take over a game. It's the "Climb on my back boys, and let's go" mentality, and the team DID follow. Being captain requires more than locker room talk. I watched all but a handful of games this year and don't recall Richie playing that way even once.
And to be fair, he is the king of commiting unforced turnovers in the offensive zone. Watch the game tape and see how many times a game he or another Flyer does a great job winning the puck battle, only to have Richie blindly throw it to no one except the opponent.
I'm not saying he's not a good player to have on the team. But captain? He doesn't show enough on the ice for that title. philharmonic55- "Folks- you need to look at the COACH...........he lost the team."
Again!?!? Why does this team habitually do this? They bring in a new coach, play good for him for a bit, then tune em out? How many new coaches do they need? This team has alot more questions than the ones I just asked. sheesh
- Any facial lacerations from shaving? brio
Sign Gagne in the offseason! Fabulous
Versteeg is a 4th line winger? Really? Compare his stats to Danny Carcillo and get back to me, you moron. Richards is one of the better captains in the league? Um, yeah, "who" exactly is saying that? Surely not the press from the last several cities who won the Cup. Good as captain as Crosby? Lidstrom? Towes? Hardly. You want to talk about a guy who "won" at every level, talk about Chris Drury, then get back to me about Richards. You want to talk about a guy battling injuries, doubt and through fitness, ended up winning the Cup, then talk about Roddy Brind'Amour. You want to talk about "great", then ask Towes about being the youngest Captain in the NHL and having to corrale Kane & Byfulglin on the way to a Cup victory. EVERYTHING changes with winning. when NOTHING changes with losing, you got problems. I see the same, weak, out of shape, could care less attitude from Richards after every loss. The team followed. They ran out of gas, stop backchecking, and lost. Again. Time for a change. Ask Mike Modano about Ken Hitchcock and get back to me. MichaelZoe
What has Chris Drury ever won? seaonasdad- Drury is a Hobey Baker Award-winner with Boston University, a Calder Trophy winner with the Colorado Avalanche, a Stanley Cup champion with the Colorado Avalanche, and an Olympic silver medalist with the United States. As a child, he also won the Little League Baseball World Series Championship with his hometown team from Trumbull, Connecticut.
