Sestito waived; JVR, Nodl hurt

POSTED: Tuesday, September 27, 2011, 1:32 PM

The Flyers have waived Tom Sestito, as Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren confirmed a TSN report. The Flyers are believed to hope they can send Sestito to their AHL affiliate in Adirondack.

Holmgren said that the Flyers' plan all along was to waive Sestito on Tuesday, even before his hit on Monday night that will likely warrant a suspension. Sestito has not yet had his hearning with the NHL's dean of discipline, Brendan Shanahan.

The Flyers are a little more than a week away from opening night and their injury list is already long.

James van Riemsdyk
and Andreas Nodl have lower-body injuries, according to Holmgren. Neither player practiced on Tuesday. JVR is not likely to play before the Oct. 6 season opener at Boston. Nodl could play this weekend.

Brayden Schenn's upper-body injury makes him questionable for Thursday's game vs. New Jersey at the Wells Fargo Center.

They did, however, receive one bit of good news. Scott Hartnell was cleared to resume hockey-related activities after undergoing a stress test to make sure his heart was in good, working order after he produced an elevated heart rate on Friday night in Detroit.

Hartnell practiced on Tuesday and said he expects to play in both of the Flyers' final preseason games.

I'm sure that 5-minute major last night really helped his cause for making the big club. What a dink.

Sestito had a chance to crack the lineup but unfortunately for Tom, the job required the candidate have a brain. Too bad Tommy, now go sit next to Shelly and don't fight. Idiots!!

I love hockey injury reports. "Lower Body Injury", "Upper Body Injury".
They might as well just list that they've got "boo-boos".

Are stomach muscle pulls lower or upper body injuries? Mid-body perhaps. Where is the line drawn?

According to the 2012 NHL Rulebook, section 68.1, paragraph "A":

"The deciding factor concerning whether a player injury shall be reported as "Upper body" or "Lower body", is whether it is above or below the belly button."

    Paragraph "B" further states:

"In the case of players lacking a belly button, the injury shall be reported as a "boo-boo."

I hope this clears that up.

Schenn was hurt just before the Rangers first goal in the first period. He got hammered into the corner boards and as the Rangers scored, he could be seen grimacing and holding his left shoulder. I thought he would be done right there, but he skated a couple of shifts and sort of disappeared. Actually, he looked pretty weak while he played. He does not look like he is ready for the NHL yet anyway.

Does anyone here know what is wrong with JVR? I didn't know he was hurt.

Sestito should be a name we forget before we even learn it. But let's hope that the Flyers don't become like last year's Pens. It's not starting out well in the injury department.

What? A Flyers goalie without a groin pull? What is the difference between a hernia and a sports hernia?

Nodl should hitch a ride to Glens Falls with Sestito...Hey Homer and Lavvy, find a spot for Matt Read!

I agree. Nothing against Nodl, but Read has looked very, very good and deserves a be in The Show.
