Pronger to return; 'Bob' to start

POSTED: Thursday, January 20, 2011, 11:37 AM

Flyers coach Peter Laviolette confirmed this morning that Chris Pronger will play tonight against Ottawa.

Pronger has been out of the lineup since sustaining a broken bone in his right foot on Dec. 15. The Flyers went 9-4 without their top defenseman. As expected, Matt Walker joined Oskars Bartulis and Dan Carcillo on the healthy scratch list.

Laviolette also said Sergei Bobrovsky will get his second consecutive start in net tonight. Bobrovsky beat the Senators in November, stopping 28 shots in the Flyers 5-1 win at the Wells Fargo Center. Bobrovsky has won his last three starts, including a 3-2 win over the Capitals on Tuesday.

The Senators (17-23-7) are 29th in the NHL in goals and just 1-6-3 in their last 10 games.

Not surprising. I think Lavy wants to see if Bob can distinguish himself as the clear #1. Is Nodl playing tonight? I think he was injured Tues night??

I heard a rumor about the Flyers being interested in J.S Giguere--Oh God I hope not. Don't do that , Homer.

I'd like to see if Bob can do what Boosh did with Beezer and take over as #1 by mid March but having their sights on bringing the Cup back to Philly you have to consider the names they are rumoring to Flyers(Kipper, Schneider, Vokun and Giggy(who won a Cup).

How could they possibly fit Kiprusoff's 5.8 million dollar salary, for three more seasons after this one, into their cap? The only way they get Kipper, is to trade Carter, and I think that is a giant step sideways. Schneider is an untouchable in Vancouver. Vokoun or Giguere would be ok, if they didn't cost the future. I bet Burke would trade Giguere for Carcillo, he has a whole team of goons.

You may as well have made up a rumor yourself. Eklund is a fraud.

Good news - hope Lavy eases him in and doesn't rack up his minutes. We need Pronger healthy for the stretch run.

I can't imagine Holmer's moves working out much better (except for Cap space). Walker proved in a quick turnaround that he can play in the playoffs when they need him if things get nasty. Pronger coming back just in enough time to turn up the intensity. Goalies playing very good. D has great chemistry. They need to make one more and figure out who is playing up-front for the playoffs. I doubt Nodl, JVR and Zherdev will be in the lineup come playoff time. I think the goalie rumors are a smoke screen by Holmer.

I would love to have Schneider but i doubt Vancouver would make a trade with the Flyers since they probably see us as their main competition for the cup

Vancouver wouldn't care about trading with the Flyers, but what would Philly give them to make them part with a blue chip prospect that they have been waiting for years to be NHL ready? They aren't trading Schneider for a third round pick or anything. Plus, trade for Schneider and the Flyers still have a goaltender with good numbers who has never won a game in the playoffs!

I think you may be right. It is being reported that Nabokov is close to signing with the Red Wings(TSN)

"I doubt Nodl, JVR and Zherdev will be in the lineup come playoff time. " - RIght, because who needs one of your best two-way players, one of your hottest young guns and a bonafide sniper in the playoffs? Unreal.

I think its Bob's job to lose right now. Bouch is an ideal back up, but i'd like to see Bob get the majority of the starts b/w now and the trade deadline (2/28). Save 2-3 games, Bob has been very good. He needs to play more and gain confidence without being over worked--which Laviolette has acknowledged. Bouch has been solid this year, but we've seen the ugly side of bouch (BOS a few games ago) that makes me cringe.

I dont see why the Flyers would disrupt their chemistry and team with any moves. People that talk poorly of JVR, Nodl and Zherdev aren't watching the same games I am. JVR was a plus 3 in his last game and has played well since his rough start..Nodl has cooled off some with his scoring but is still a good young player who has tons of upside. Zherdev has 14 goals and has not played full time.. Dont be surprised if he is one of the biggest keys to the playoffs..

"Bob" is a nice nickname in print, but for the fans to chant for a player's name it really should have two syllables. I like "Ser-Gei, Ser-Gei". It is even reminiscent of a chant heard decades ago when the Flyers were not only taking home the Conn Smyhthe trophy (given to the so chanted) but having their names engraved in silver after winning the last NHL game of the post-season.

again i see people getting excited about another team's BACKUP goalie. theres a reason that theyre a backup. if these guys were that great, theyd be STARTERS. and i love the comment that nodl, zherdev and jvr wont be in the lineup come playoff time. and these people think they know hockey??

JVR has been a revelation of late. He not only features prominently in the postseason plans, but don't be surprised if he turns some heads once he gets there.

Prongs is comin back tonite to warm up for Sunday,....Homer has this team in great shape for the stretch run and the torch will be passed on Sunday afternoon,....we don't necessarily need a win on Sunday;...we need to come out of it healthy and playing well and the torch will be passed regardless and that's a credit to Homer and the job he's done spending up to the Cap and adding depth while still saving a little for tweaking,.....would like to see Prongs take his time getting into it and he'll be clicking on all cylinders by april first,.....Go Flyers

I'm praying Homer doesnt move JVR for some washed up goalie. Do not mess this up, I think we have the goalies to win the cup, especially with this depth. See, 2010 Blackhawks.

He wouldn't trade JVR for a washed up goalie. It wouldn't make any sense in the salary cap. If he wants a washed up goalie, he can claim Nabokov off waivers once Detroit signs him. So, four rookie goalies in the 100 year history of the NHL have won the Stanley Cup, and you are willing to take those odds? Granted, Niemi is the only one who was awful (Cam Ward, Patrick Roy, and Ken Dryden were the others).
