Predators match offer for Weber

POSTED: Tuesday, July 24, 2012, 3:26 PM
The Predators matched the Flyers' offer sheet for defenseman Shea Weber. (Associated Press)

The Nashville Predators have matched the Flyers' offer sheet and will retain captain Shea Weber.

The Flyers offered Weber a 14-year, $110 million deal last week. The Predators chose to match, keeping their captain in Nashville.

“In tendering an offer sheet to Shea Weber, we were trying to add a top defenseman entering the prime of his career. With Nashville matching our offer, we wish Shea and the Predators all the best," Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren said in a statement.

More details to come.

Wow. Suprised a bit that Nashville matched but good attemp to by Holmgren. Can't blame the Flyers for not trying. Now Weber is stuck in Nashville for at least 1 full year. And after absorbing almost $30 mil in this first year, why would Nashville want to move him after that? The remaining 13 yrs and $80 mil are a bargain for a dman like him. Looks like they'll have to look elsewhere via trade for more help on defense (Yandle?) or offense (Ryan, Doan).

Very disappointing that my post did not get published. It was a little long but if the sports writers are incapable of explaining why the Predators HAD to match the offer to survive financially, then you should at least have let it be posted here. If anyone on these posts understood corporate debt, Lines of credit, interest rates, debt restructuring, etc, then we all would have known a week ago that the only two possible scenarios were the contract getting matched or a worked out trade. The only thing that threatened the Preds long term solvency would be losing Weber and 20% of the gate for 4 late 1st rd picks. Short story: If they can only come up with 20 of the first 28 million then they can float 8 million on a credit line at 2% interest. It would cost them a whopping 160k a year.

wow this sucks. this offseason has been a disaster for the flyers. rangers get much better, penguins pick up a ton of future talent for staal. flyers sign mediocre spare parts..yikes

Totally agree! Personally, I would have traded Couturier and Schenn for Weber. Flyers have plenty of offense and are in desperate need for a difference makeer (like Pronger) on defense. Big mistake Holmgren...

The off season and the post season. Hey, but props to Holmgren for providing entertaining, if unproductive, regular season hockey to the Phaithful.

without Weber, this is a soft and undersized flyers team. jvr and jagr were soft, but at least they had great size. this lineup looks small for a stanley cup contender. yikes

Well, they didn't gat the player they wanted. But, at least they managed to financially cripple another francfise, and all it cost the Flyers was some ink.

Wow - very surprised that the Preds matched considering the financial implications of the deal and how it compares to overall team value regardless of how good a player Shea is - this just doesn't make logical business sense for Nashville. At least Weber stays in the Western Conference...

Good work. Sign a guy who clearly doesn't want to be on your team and who you can't afford. Smart move...

Ugh. So in a nutshell, the Flyers are going to be a whole lot worse on opening night than they were when the season ended this year. Oh well. What's another decade or two?

Well this blows. At least we get to keep all the kids now and take a shot at Ryan or Doan. Tell me why the Flyers can't compete with Pit who we completely dismantled in the playoffs? They lost their best 2 way player.

They can't play 2 goalies at once, who cares who their backup goalie is? They traded Michalek TO the 'Yotes, not the other way around. Yes, they got 2 nice prospects out of the draft and a 3rd line center from the Canes, congratulations. Now, again, tell me how that makes them better this year? Jordan Staal was their best 2 way player and it's not even close.

Why can't we compete against Pittsburgh or Boston? We killed Pittsburgh last year during regular season and playoffs and we were very competitive against Boston. We lost one game badly 6:0 that's about it. We had two SO and a win against Boston. Annoying and dumb statement by neoconcancer.

Extend BRYZ contract for 6 more years..make it a 15 yr contract!!..If I was Homer I would sit tight and hold my money till next year. We cant compete with Rangers this year....If Bryz repeats last year we will have to eat his contract next year..By the end of this year we will better know where we stand...

Nashville had no choice...had they let him walk, they'd likely have to fold. Now with him, they have a chance but will likely have to fold anyway. There's just no way they could lose their top 2 players, both defensemen. Flyers are royally screwed now.....this hurts, a lot!

Apparently no one actually asked someone that understands how to run a corporation if the contract could or should be matched. To those of us who do, it is obvious that losing Weber would have potentially folded the franchise in 2 years while keeping him gives them a chance . Do these reporters do any work or do they just regurgitate everything they hear?

Every off season Homer goes out and tries to make this team better via trades of FA signings. He's made bold moves. Some good, some bad. But so far none of them has yielded a cup win. There's no doubt they would be better with Weber. But maybe this year, sticking with the core young guys already on the team is the move (or in this case non move), to make. Time will tell.

Without a top-shelf defenseman this is an early exit playoff team. Plenty of offense, but big time lacking on defense considering the net-minder. This is a good team as-is, but not a Stanley Cup team. Has to really hurt watching the two homegrowns win a Cup in LA!

Wow! Definitely surprised. Congrats to Nashville on keeping their star. I always like seeing stars stay with their team (even though, obviously, I wanted him to come to Philly); although, I wonder at what true cost will Nashville end up paying in the end for him. Can't fault the Flyers for trying. Things just aren't working out in the their favor right now. Hopefully, they can find some workable pieces.

Homer, should kiss his sister, at least that's considered a tie.You traded Richards, which led to the Kings winning the Cup! Signed 'Bryz' to an nine year deal.Threw in Michael Chaput in the Sestito deal, and didn't draft Olli Maatta with the 20th pick, butPittsburgh did. (HTML deleted)

I think the preds think now Homer is going to have to make a trade with them for Schenn, Coutier, and Mezz. Don't do it Homer. Let them go bankrupt. Wait it out. They will become very desperate. They can't handle this contract and you know it.

Gee, you'd think NSH would be nicer to a lying sack like Holmgren. Maybe he should've offered them Pronger, like he shipped an injured Forsberg to them.

Please, tell me again how a team eliminated in the second round is better than the team that went to the SCF. Laughter helps me relax.

What looked like a brilliant move by Homer has turned into another BRYSASTER....We would have been a stone cold lock to sign Weber next year when he would have been an UFA...or to trade for him at the deadline...now he will never be a FLYER....those of you who say well at least the offer sheet kept him from our competition it turns out the offer sheet destroyed the cinch opportunity to sign him next year....We are in a very negative run and started with Trading Richards and Carter.....that freed up the $$ to sign BRZY which was the beginning of the end.

Looks like Nashville will join the mortgage list with jersey and LA. " send money quick daddy Bettman" . Dumb dumb move by police. He' ll be gone by Christmas. Can you say Columbus? fman 727..are you kidding??..rangers lost Dubs ( and his 10 goals and 4.5M contract) and replaced him with a 40 goal scorer!!..Gaborik out 4 months..not so he will be back in NOV..play 20 less games and be well rested for playoffs....They are significntly better and we arent..not good since we have lost our last 8 times to them!! And how do you know Rangers..Pens..etc wont get Weber after next season??..Preds can trade him after the season is over...any chance they would trade to Flyers after Flyers tried to fleece them...I would say no...Homer took a gamble and it backfired big time...

Nashville had to match. They have a hard enough time selling tickets as it is. At least Weber will stay in the West, continue giving the Red Wings fits, and didn't wind up in Jersey, Boston, New York or Pittsburg..
