No Gagne at Practice

POSTED: Monday, October 26, 2009, 2:09 PM
Plays like these can't help Simon Gagne's groin/hip area. He is being evaluated today with an ultrasound.

If you didn’t notice Simon Gagne on the ice much in the 3rd period of Sunday night’s loss to the Sharks, it’s because he wasn’t there. He only skated in one shift before sitting on the bench for the rest of the game.

Gagne did not skate in Monday’s practice, either.

The Flyers are mum on his injury but say that he is doubtful for Tuesday’s game against Alex Ovechkin and the Capitals in Washington.

Gagne will undergo an ultrasound test Monday afternoon in his hip and groin area to try and pinpoint the discomfort.

“Simon has experienced some lower body soreness,” Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren said. “Right now we’re not real concerned. He has been going through some issues.

“I’m not sure [if it’s related to his hip surgery from May 28]. That’s what we’re trying to get to the bottom of. He just doesn’t feel right.”

Holmgren also said he “doesn’t think anyone is sure” if it is Gagne’s groin or hip – or a totally unrelated injury:

Holmgren initially thought that it was a strength issue that plagued Gagne, since he missed time working out this summer with his rehab schedule.

It seemed though that Holmgren was needling at Gagne’s toughness and willingness to battle through injuries on Monday. Holmgren said last week that he thinks Gagne needs to score a goal and he will be fine.

Gagne did that on Saturday against the Panthers, breaking his 7-game goal scoring drought – his longest to start a season.

“I look at him sometimes and I think he looks fine,” Holmgren said. “For whatever reason, he’s got some issues. We’re trying to get to the bottom of it.

“I think we’ve hit a stumbling block here. We need to get to the bottom of it, for Simon’s own good and find out where he’s at. Hopefully we can find something that’s wrong.”

With Gagne being out, Flyers coach John Stevens juggled the lines again at practice:

Van Riemsdyk – Carter – Briere
Hartnell – Richards – Pyorala
Carcillo – Giroux – Asham
Cote – Powe – Laperriere

Betts (extra man, still no contact)

Ryan Parent was also on the ice for the first time today with the team. He said he is doubtful for Tuesday’s game but he is more likely to play on Saturday, Halloween, against Carolina.

We will have an update on Gagne’s ultrasound later today.

If Mumbles rolls out those lines against Ovie & Co. they might as well forfiet the game. It will look better than the embarrassement they will show on the ice. It is long overdue, send Mumbles and the two ex tough guys packing. Injury to Gags or not, you can;t keep juggling the lines every day and expect it to work. Nobody will ever know who to gel with and the chemistry will be shot beyond repair. We need a coaching staff that will come in and wake these players up from A to Z. At this point in the season, Pronger was a waste of money. They have lulled him into Flyer dreamland for defenseman. Is that Chris Pronger or Christine Pronger wearing number 20, I honsetly cant tell. They would have been best off saving the money and keeping Sbisa and playing Kukkonen if this is what they are having Pronger do. There are way too many high powered, skilled players on this team to be showing the way they do, This is flat out nothing more than a coaching issue. No much different then the Pens were last year with Therrien.

When is this team going to figure out that Carter isn't a Center? The only time he works hard is to get his shot. He passed up 3 or 4 chances to setup guys last night with poor % shots and at least 3 turnovers trying to weave around and get open for a shot. Move him to the wing with a playmaker to feed him PLEASE!!

This team needs a shake up. I know many would disagree with me, but I would trade Jeff Carter to shake it up. He is just too soft. Good goal scorer, but too soft.

Giroux in the center of Carcillo and Asham is a waste of one of the most talent players on the team. The way he passes he needs to be on a line with a goal scorer.

A couple of things: 1) No way you trade Jeff Carter...NO WAY. 2) Putting Giroux with 2 stiffs is an awful decision. He's a playmaker and he needs to play with goal scorers. 3) We waited too long to trade Gange, he's hurt again...UGH!

Gagne hurt again what a surprise how many times is that during his ten year career? For a team prior to the beginning of the season that was suppose to be strong up the middle and with the addition of Pronger drastically improved on defense what am I missing? Emery seems to be an improvement over Biron but when is this drastically improved defense actually going to come out and play? Strong up the middle, how can you be strong up the middle when your 3rd from the bottom in faceoffs? Who knew we would miss Blair Betts basically a walk on who they almost didn't get signed and his faceoff ability! I know it is only 9 games into the season but already we have Richards off/on relationship with the media, Stevens trying to find the perfect line combinations to ensure he stays employed every other night, a backup goalie whose best days are way behind him, that drastically improved defense especially Coburn & Kimmo who keeps telling us they have to play better but keep leaving the goaltender hung out to dry and it is all the schedule makers fault as they still feel like it is the preseason. Well tomorrow is the 10th game of the season in D.C. still plenty of time to get this turned around but right now with our strong up the middle play and drastically improved defense does any Flyers fan really feel that confident at the moment? Go Phils beat the Dark Empire!!!!!
