No more ribs for Flyers

POSTED: Wednesday, April 4, 2012, 12:58 PM

If the Flyers want to win in Pittsburgh on Saturday – and in the first round of their likely Stanley Cup playoff series – they will have to do so without their good luck charm.

Peter Laviolette said that the Flyers’ reason for success in Pittsburgh is their post-game meal, in which they have ribs delivered to their charter plane from Dee Jay’s in Weirton, W. Va. The Flyers are a perfect 5-0-0 at the Consol Energy Center since it opened on Oct. 7, 2010.

Turns out, the owner of Dee Jay’s, Dewey Guida, couldn’t take the heat from the kitchen after getting blasted by Penguins fans.

Not only is Dee Jay’s closed for the Easter weekend, but Guida told the Steubenville (Ohio) Herald-Star that he is no longer going to be delivering food to the Flyers.

“No more ribs for them,” Guida told the paper. “And I pray, I hope, that the Penguins beat their skates off.”

Guida, whose restaurant has hosted famous athletes, coaches and even presidents in its 24 years of business, is a die-hard Penguins fan. His relationship with Laviolette, though, dates back to 1997-98, when Laviolette was a rookie coach in the ECHL with the nearby Wheeling (W.Va.) Nailers.

Yes, the Nailers is actually the real name of the team.

“It started out so innocent,” Guida said. “Peter Laviolette and I have been friends for years. We became friends, and we've kept the relationship up over the years, as I have with other coaches, like Scotty Bowman and Eddie Johnston.”

Now, Guida has done numerous radio, television and print interviews to spread the word for his local patrons that he won’t support the enemy.

“Those ribs seem to do the trick,” Laviolette was quoted as saying after the game. “Whenever the ribs are ordered, we win. I want to thank Dee Jay’s.”

It’s unclear what the Flyers are now going to do for a post-game treat on the quick ride home. Word is that they won’t go hungry.

Still, it’s tough to fathom a little rib factory in West Virginia would be ungrateful for the plug on national television. Then again, things are a little backward there.

They should be having cheesesteaks flown in from Philly - not some back country trash!

So NoCup, it appears your name correctly indicates that your team did NOT win a cup in 1975 - the Flyers did.

And that was the last year the Cryers have sniffed it..Who's leading the charge this year? The Bloated Leadfoot Gambler Jagr, Gutless Giroux, has done nothing lately...and Hit Them in the Back Hartnell...It's GroundHog Day 1976 all over again!!! Cup Nazi says.....NO CUP FOR YOU!!!!!

It's probably for the best anyways..A rib might fall off the plate and injure poor little Danielle Briere... and Giroux is still afraid to come out of hiding since the last Pens game. He and the bloated Jagr haven't exactly lit it up lately, have they?? I'm not talking about the casino action either..

Does Crosby play Saturday? I'd like to see Rinaldo vs Vitale, and Shelley vs Engelland. I just hope Flyers don't suffer any injuries between now and next week.

If that BBQ joint runs its business the same way as the Pens do, then they'll just tank it, threaten to leave, and wait for a young superstar. Guess what though- there ain't no Sidney Crosbys in the West Virginia food service industry.

A Pittsburgh fan AND business sense to alienate customers? Seems legit.

...and Pittsburgh fans have the nerve to ridicule Flyers fans. They are forcing the poor guy to close his rib joint for a weekend. Jerks.

There will be a Twitter pic of Hartnell knee-deep in those ribs. Wait and see.

They'll be dining on Penquins. There's a lot of meat in those flightless birds.

Well I can assure you that Dee Jays will not be hurting for business due to this. They are always packed. Best Ribs around. Glad you liked the link Frank.

A little backwards there Frank?... Try 30 years behind. Sayings such as "yins" instead of "you guys" or "tennies" instead of sneakers got me out of there. Seriously, putting fries on a sandwich and calling it a Pittsburgh delicatessen is a joke!

If the team really wants the ribs, I'm sure a shill will be able to get them for the team.

Next the Penguin fans will demand that they won't hold the games at Consol Energy Center, thus really giving it to the Flyers........Philly area chefs can find a way to have even better ribs sent for that ride home !

In other news...Woody's Bar will continue to keep its door open for Cindy and the penqueens. They see no problem servicing the enemy.

The Flyers won't be hungry after they feast on the penqueens. As for Dee Jay's...well, their punishment is being in West Virginia (where it's normal for a brother and sister to be husband and wife) and a penqueen fan.

"Still, it’s tough to fathom a little rib factory in West Virginia would be ungrateful for the plug on national television." What national television? The only people that picked up this story are philly.com writers. The guy will get more business from WV and Pitt by having it advertised that he will not serve the Flyers.
