Man fined $200 for tossing banana at Simmonds

POSTED: Monday, January 9, 2012, 12:44 PM

A man who hurled a banana on the ice at Flyers forward Wayne Simmonds during an exhibition game in London, Ontario, was fined $200 today, according to the Globe and Mail.

Christopher Morehouse was charged with provincial trespassing because London police said there was not enough evidence to charge Morehouse with a hate crime.

Morehouse, 26, pled guilty through his attorney, Faisal Joseph. He did not appear in court and was given 90 days to pay the fine.

Joseph has said his client did not know that throwing a banana at a black player could be seen as hateful.

Simmonds was approaching the Detroit goal during the shootout of the Sept. 22 loss. Simmonds is one of just 42 black players to play in the NHL since 1960.

At least no Flyers fans were assaulted, canadiens tased, little girls vomited upon and no reports of children drinking beer.

Since people are having trouble with it: the above comment was a joke pointing out that other cities are as bad or worse than Philly.

I was being facetious. Hence the "Oh wait..."

I was pointing out that other cities are just as bad or worse. I thought it was pretty obvious.

"(Faisal) Joseph has said his client did not know that throwing a banana at a black player could be seen as hateful". If his client insulted a Saudi he would have recommended jail time.

He also had to be taught that calling a black man, the N word might be taken as offensive...he also wasn't aware that it might hurt if he kicked someone in the balls

i believe max was tongue-in-cheek. it was vancouver. point being, even though cindy 'egg shell' crosby chooses to ignore it, we're not the only area to have idiot fans, ours just seem to be highlighted when it happens more often than not.

This guy sounds like a complete scum ball...especially considering that Simmons is such a class act, gives back to the community and seems like a great teammate...whatever the intentions, it was a really uncool move! Sorry Wayne...you deserve better...thanks for all of your hard work...
