Leighton injured: High ankle sprain

NASHVILLE – Flyers goalie Michael Leighton left their game in Nashville during the first period tonight with a high ankle sprain, according to general manager Paul Holmgren.

During a play in front, a Predators forward collided with Leighton, pushing him out of the crease. Leighton was slow getting up.

At the next stoppage, Leighton needed help skating off the ice as he was attended to by team trainer Jim McCrossin.

Brian Boucher entered the game with 10:15 left in the first period and gave up a goal 20 seconds later to put the Flyers down, 3-1, after Jeff Carter gave them the lead just 1:21 into the contest.

Holmgren said Leighton is day-to-day "for now," but high ankle sprains have a tendency to take a while to heal.

Johan Backlund, who has been called up a few times this season to backup during injuries but has never appeared in a game, probably would've been Leighton's replacement if needed on the roster. Considering the fact that Backlund is hurt - and did not practice today with the Phantoms - the Flyers may be searching for an emergency backup.

Former Phantoms backup goalie John Grahame, who has NHL experience, was claimed by Colorado from his pro tryout contract at the trade deadline.
