NASHVILLE – Flyers goalie Michael Leighton left their game in Nashville during the first period tonight with a high ankle sprain, according to general manager Paul Holmgren.

During a play in front, a Predators forward collided with Leighton, pushing him out of the crease. Leighton was slow getting up.

At the next stoppage, Leighton needed help skating off the ice as he was attended to by team trainer Jim McCrossin.

Brian Boucher entered the game with 10:15 left in the first period and gave up a goal 20 seconds later to put the Flyers down, 3-1, after Jeff Carter gave them the lead just 1:21 into the contest.

Holmgren said Leighton is day-to-day "for now," but high ankle sprains have a tendency to take a while to heal.

Johan Backlund, who has been called up a few times this season to backup during injuries but has never appeared in a game, probably would've been Leighton's replacement if needed on the roster. Considering the fact that Backlund is hurt - and did not practice today with the Phantoms - the Flyers may be searching for an emergency backup.

Former Phantoms backup goalie John Grahame, who has NHL experience, was claimed by Colorado from his pro tryout contract at the trade deadline.

Stay tuned. We’ll keep you updated right here.

It's time for Bob Backlund again, he can bring his WWF belt with him.

This is a blessing in disguise. Hopefully Boucher can get in his hot tub time machine and take it back to 2000.

you would think a team that has lived off of its Stanley Cups for 35 years and still tries to play the same type of hockey thinking it will win would actually look at their last Cup winner and realize one of the biggest reasons they had a parade was because of Bernie Parent. You know, an amazing GOALIE. This has been a problem for far too long now and I'm tired of it. You really think Leighton or Boucher can get them through even a round of the playoffs? You are dreaming. It's a shame I love the Flyers and I always will, but please, enough is enough. Get a goalie once and for all I can't take it anymore.

You can never be happy about an injury and as much as I trash this guy, this sucks. Maybe now I have a chance, I'm gonna dust off my pads and go wait by my phone. How am I not surprised at this turn of events? Can't wait to see what's gonna come from this. I can't beleive I'm saying this, wait for it, wait for it,........ I hope Leighton doesn't miss any games. That hurt me.

What a tremendous loss. How will the flyers replace the lightning reflexes, the blazing glove hand, the tremendous lateral movement of Lumbering Leighton? Well, with Boucher, who while not a No. 1 goalie, is a better goalie than waiver wire man. Anyway, it's not like the flyers are serious contenders...

Well, at least the Flyers now have their excuse for this season. I can see the start of the season ticket letter now, "Even though injuries kept us from our ultimate goal, we feel we've got a good young club that will compete for years to come...." AHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA. Same 'ol, same 'ol...... Excuse me, I've got to get back to the bar and refill the Kool-aid.

After he settled down you could see that Bouch is a lot quicker than Leighton. If noy for a bad luck finger cut the job would've been his anyways so we're right back where we should be, watching Bouch try to lead this team and hoping to hell that he doesn't get hurt because there's nobody behind him.

Nice job by Boucher coming in cold, salvaged a point at least.

I am about as sick as seeing Philly players get injured at the end of a season than I am of hearing about "kool aid" when it comes to Philly fans: get over it, you aren't creative and it's not humorous at all. It's right wing garbage. Anyway, this sucks and unless Boucher turns into mircale part two and the team starts putting up October numbers again, we'll be rooting for anyone but the Devils and Pens in the playoffs.
