Defenseman Randy Jones cleared waivers today at noon but the Flyers have not yet made up their mind on what to do with the 28-year-old defenseman. Jones can now be sent to the Phantoms or remain with the team as a $2.75 million cap hit.
"Well, [sending Jones to the Phantoms] is a possibility," Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren said. "But we haven't decided that yet.
"He could still be on our roster, too. We have a number of options putting him on waivers. Now that he is cleared gives us a different option."
Jones was placed on waivers Saturday, likely to free salary cap room so that James van Riemsdyk, Mika Pyorala, Danny Syvret and Blair Betts - who all still remain in training camp - can fit under the $56.8 million hard cap.
The Flyers did trim their roster by four on Monday, sending forwards Lukas Kaspar, Jason Ward, Patrick Maroon, and David Laliberte to Adirondack after practice.
As it stands, the Flyers have 25 players remaining in camp, including Jones and goalie Johan Backlund, who was just recalled from the Phantoms on Sunday to replace injured Brian Boucher.
The Flyers officially need to have their roster at 23 by Wednesday at 3 p.m. Holmgren said that he would speak to Blair Betts' agent late Monday night to continue negotiations on a contract. Betts is still riding the tryout contract he signed before training camp.

Enjoy the mountain air, Jonesy JSaq
You can shake a mediocre defenseman tree and 50 Randy Jones's will fall out. tbone00
Good news on all fronts. Jones gone and VanRiemsdyk pretty much a lock to make the team. Jones was a weak spot and now we can have a third D pair of Parent and Tollefson. I like how that sounds Crosbysucks
The best defense in the NHL just got better by subtraction. mikegdj

Parent and Tollefsen isn't better than Parent and Jones, especially if Jones is healthy. Tollefsen will be the 7th defenseman by November, with Syvret as 6th. JSaq
They still need to create a roster spot for Forsberg. mikebacon
Better, maybe not, but cheaper and no worse. I am excited for Syvret. cesegal
Comment removed.- off topic. it is very refreshing having flyers fans' posts to read. every idiot and their mother are polluting the eagles and phillies boards with their gloom and doom attitudes. great to see JVR make the team without reservation. where does he rank amoung this year's rookie class? Taveres and Hedman will be the front runners for ROY, but JVR might br in the forefront of everyone's mind a month or two in. I think it will be interesting to see how he measures up against those guys, as the biggest complaint against him was the possiblity of stunted growth in college. go flyers.
does Jones use "soul glow" in his hair? mattk
I will officially pass gas to mark the start of the Flyers season. neddyflanders
Happy to see Jones gone. JSaq, I don't know what team you were watching, but Jones was mediocre at best and was often a defensive liability. It's nice to see the Crazies have come out and started spouting ridiculous "Forsberg-to-the-Flyers" rumors again. It's entertaining. DrM
this team will be awesome defensively but will struggle to score goals...watch you'll see.. canada51stSTATE
Is it possible that Forsberg was putting his right foot in his left skate? jvile
