JVR out with broken bone in foot
James van Riemsdyk’s season is not getting any easier.
In the first period of Thursday night’s game against the Islanders, van Riemsdyk blocked a Milan Jurcina blast from the point and broke a bone in his foot, according to Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren.
Originally, van Riemsdyk tried to remain on the bench to fight through the pain but soon left to get x-rays taken.
For now, the Flyers have offered no timetable for his return. He will be re-evaluated by Dr. Steven Raikin on Friday.
Van Riemsdyk, 23, just returned to the lineup on Feb. 18 after missing 15 straight games with a concussion. Previously, he missed 5 games in December with a torn muscle in his abdominal region. We’ve also reported he has been hampered by a hip injury for the better part of the season.
The former No. 2 overall pick has collected just 11 goals and 13 assists - as many points as defenseman Andrej Meszaros - since signing a 6-year, $25.5 million contract extension last summer.
Van Riemsdyk has just 3 goals and 5 assists in the 23 games he’s played since Nov. 21.

Minimum 6 weeks out. Fly Guy
just plain bad luck...blocking a shot......morons on this site want to give up this kid...he was the only bright spot in last yrs playoffs fbpdplt
Done for year. Pray briere wakes up fman727- That makes perfect sense! Remember the playoffs in 2010? Gagne and Carter broke bones in their feet and came back to play later in the playoffs!
logicandreason
woulda, coulda, shoulda traded him. brio
the guy breaks his foot blocking a shot - and people are calling him a bust, or saying he should have been traded??
Vinny1925
Maybe with JVR's injury they will be able to get Briere back in the lineup....what?....you mean he has been playing this whole time?
JVR haters should go back and watch him in the playoffs last year. He has the skills to dominate. Hexy4GM
JVR has been playing through painful injuries all year long. He is only 22 or so, too young to give up on.
Some of you guys dissing him should try to go to work injured and see how that works out for you. mortt1956
Sorry but one playoff series doesnt make a player. To me his attitude is what is the worst. I will cheer for the guy and have always hoped he would live up to his potential. He doesnt handle criticism well either which is pretty immature. And i dont buy the injury deal, tons of players play with injuries and still play at a high level. shanehockey28
i was at the game and knew it was going to be bad when he laid out to block the shot. he was in a very vulnerable position. he even made a play with the puck as he was trying to get up. to those saying hes a bust i guess you just dont understand the game of hockey. with the current group of players JVR makes the flyers a better team when he is in the line up. i'd like to see him play with out being hampered by nagging injuries before i pass judgement on if hes a bust. mc62strat
JVR really has been snake bitten this year. I'm not ready to give up on him, but he's never going to reach the levels of Logan Couture or Jamie Benn, two players taken after him in the 07 draft. Repubrebirth
the guys been hurt most of the year & still put up the same numbers as last season. That's not a bust, thats called an injury plagued season it happens to the best of them, it's not something the guy can control. Give the guy a break & give us all a break & stop being negative just for the sake of being negative, you'll find you enjoy life a little more. mos19delta
he's a bust yet teams were calling the Flyers for him at the deadline, despite his production and sizeable contract. I say he's got a future. dpcoz
tuff year for the kid. Romus
Yeah best offer was Niemi for JVR straight up, Niemmi is nice but not exactly an eye popping offer. If Homer got a good offer he would have pulled the trigger. shanehockey28
Whats JVR's favorite ice cream?........Mr. Softee. And Niemi has 5 shutouts this season...more than the flyers team has in the last 3 years, including one against us Tuesday. Would have taken that trade in a hearbeat. The problem is he doesn't fit. He's just like Jeff Carter in that respect and many others..like heart. The only thing different is he doesn't score near as much or have beatiful blonde highlights taht bring out his eyes like Jeff did.. philly thug
You people are a bunch of real winners. Let's see getting hit in the foot with a hard shot and he breaks his foot. A concussion. Boy that sure means he is injury prone. I bet if someone hit one of you turkeys in the head with a brick you would get a concussion and break bones. rich729
The same clowns that said trade Scott Hartnell are saying trade JVR. The kid will come back and be good. DrZ88
