How bad is Flyers' division?
The Metropolitan division has easily been the worst division in hockey.
The Flyers (4-9-1) will their 8th Metropolitan divisional game of the season tonight against New Jersey (3-7-4) tonight.
While the uninspiring matchup, the two teams played to a 1-0 Flyers shutout win on Saturday night in New Jersey, won't be a featured broadcast, it will be another startling peek inside just how putrid the Metropolitan has been this season.
How bad? Consider a few of these eye-opening stats courtesy of Grantland:
> Overall record: 49-58-11, a points percentage of .462, which would average out to 76 points in a season. In perspective, not a single Eastern Conference team had fewer than 78 points in 2011-12.
> Only Pittsburgh is among the NHL's top 15 in points. Washington is the only other team in the division with more wins than losses.
> Teams with a points percentage of .500 or lower in the Metropolitan: six. Teams with a points percentage of .500 or lower in the other three divisions combined: six.
> Thirteen of the 22 other NHL teams have earned at least a point in every single game against the Metropolitan this season.
> Metropolitan division teams spend more money on the salary cap than any other division.
There is one, pipe-dream upshot of all of these statistics. If the Flyers could ever get their act together, it wouldn't be impossible to finish inside the top three in the division and automatically qualify for the playoffs. With 68 games to play, the Flyers are 6 points back with a game in-hand.
The big 'if' here is the Flyers getting their act together, though.
