Free agent Bill Guerin has decided to accept an offer to tryout with the Flyers, Guerin told the Daily News.

A Flyers source has confirmed that Guerin would attend camp on a tryout, beginning when the team officially reports on Friday afternoon for physicals.

Guerin, 39, has been informally working out at the Flyers Skate Zone in Voorhees with other veterans since Sept. 1.

On a tryout, Guerin can still elect to leave and sign with any other team.

Guerin, a Wilbraham, Mass., native, posted 21 goals and 24 assists for 45 points with Pittsburgh last year. Pittsburgh general manager Ray Shero did not inform Guerin that his services would not be needed this year until Aug. 25, well after the free agency period opened on July 1.

Guerin is the only player in NHL history to score 20 goals in a season with seven different teams. He has 429 career goals and 427 assists in 1,263 games.

Forward Blair Betts was in a similar situation last season. He entered training camp with the Flyers without a contract and finally signed for $550,000 on the first day of the regular season.

Would be a nice addition. Brings an "attitude".

Replaces Knuble's leadership and power play presence.

Please get him signed. A guy like Guerin brings nothing but upside to the team in terms of character.

Did he lose a limb or something? Tryout? This guy notched 45 points last year. I can't believe he has to go through the embarassment of a tryout with those numbers. There must be something we do not know (don't tell me he is old...you think his game is going to drop off that much in a few months?), or else I would have to think he would have already been paraded around at a press conference as a prized free agent acquisition. Gives us the real story here, Frank.

Bill Guerin would be a great pickup, even at 39 y/o...let's sign the guy!

The Flyers will get this done. Seems like a no-brainer.

It allows Guerin the option of signing with another team if there is a better money offer if he so chooses. I would say that he probably asked for it to be structured that way so as not to limit his options.

Guerin is a good two way hockey guy who can still muck it up. I think it's a good sign if they do.

Signing Bill Guerin would be a total no brainer. Homer should sign him now to a one year deal. Cap problem? No problem - get rid of stiffs Carcillo and/or Shelley. Guerin adds grit, skill, leadership, and all the intangibles you'd want out of a winner. If anyone was born to wear the Flyers sweater, it's this guy.

Bill Guerin was awesome when I used him in NHL '98. Hopefully his skills haven't diminshed.

I agree with everyone. He would be a great pickup. But can the Flyers afford him? Hopefully Homer can pull this one off.
