Grossmann signed to extension

POSTED: Friday, April 6, 2012, 5:15 PM

PITTSBURGH -- Nick Grossmann has played just 22 games in a Flyers uniform since arriving from Dallas via trade on Feb. 16.

That was more than enough of an audition for Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren.
The Flyers signed Grossmann to a multi-year extension on Friday, as announced by the team. Financial terms of the deal are not yet available.

The new deal avoids having Grossmann become an unrestricted free agent on July 1. He was acquired from Dallas in exchange for a second round pick in 2012 and a third round pick in 2013.

Grossmann, 27, has been a house since arriving in Philadelphia. Though currently battling a lower-body injury, believed to be his knee, Grossmann has provided some much needed stability and toughness to a Flyers' blue line that has been held together by little more than duct tape this season.

More coming...

POTENTIAL REST? The Flyers re-called forward Harry Zolnierczyk on Friday from Adirondack on emergency conditions. That means another forward must be unable to play in Saturday's game, which could be a potential game to rest for someone like Claude Giroux, who has actually been battling a cold this week. Saturday's game at Consol Energy Center, the regular season finale for both teams, has absolutely zero bearing on the standings for either team.

Grossmann is a very responsible guy who takes his stay-at-home role very seriously. Plus, on the Flyers he has shown some offensive upside nobody in Dallas knew he was capable of. The Flyers, in contrast to the pre-lockout era, are signing more character guys these days then they used to. I like that approach! However, the financial details need to be known to be able to evaluate this signing completely.

Grossmann in, likely Carle out. Great move. I would look to lock up Kubina as well if you can get him for a short reasonable deal.

This was an excellent move by the Flyers. Grossman has played well and I'm hoping he is back in the lineup soon.

Let's call up frank the animal!!! They better not go after our good players or we better take a stick to Cindy's head!

Time for Kimmo to retire, he just cant win any foot races, one dimensional on the PP and he is old. Clear his 6 million dollar salary and go after Suter.
    Fabulous

So what does this say about the prospects for Pronger returning?

$14 mill for 4 years. A nice raise for Grossmann.

Good deal, but bad timing. Grossman's got his deal now so he doesn't have that extra motivation to go all out in the playoffs. Carle now knows he won't be resigned so he now also has less motivation to go all out for the flyers

Good point, Savage Smurf. Was thinking the same thing. This move could be very telling as far as how the organzation feels about Pronger's future. That being said, Grossman has played well since coming to the Flyers.

Great scouting Homer. Grossman plays smart and tough. Love it. Imagine if we did have Pronger and Mezaros. Stanley Cup.

Shelley and Rinaldo better be putting on the foil tomorrow. What is the name of the goon the Pens brought up for the game. More gutless actions from the Penguins.

It's no coincidence Bryz's game turned around when Grossmann and Kubina arrived. Great signing Grossmann...I guess this means bye bye Carle, and Pronger is going to retire. Regarding the pens game, no need to goon it up on our end. We've proved our dominance over them this year and there's nothing to gain in this game so rest the stars and play as many Phantoms as we can. I'd be surprised if Cindy or Gina play too. Play a clean game and whatever Lavi does he better not call them whiners or he'll get another fine. Poor Torts, $20k to say what the rest of the league feels but won't say in public...this Pens bias under Buttman is ridiculous.

He is a great 4 or 5 defenseman that brings experience and toughness around the goal. He plays well enough in his own end to get some PK time too. Though he seems like a role player on the statistical surface, he really is core piece with 19 mins of ice per game and a solid +5 overall.
