Giroux could have an ankle injury.

PITTSBURGH -- Claude Giroux received an x-ray on his ankle post-game, after being hit in the skate with a shot in the Flyers’ 3-2 opening night win over division-rival Pittsburgh.

Giroux declined to talk about the injury but was seen visibly favoring his ankle while walking back to the locker room.

Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren said Giroux’s injury was “nothing,” less than five minutes after Giroux returned from the x-ray room. Holmgren had not even received the results yet.

Giroux will be re-evaluated on Friday in St. Louis but Holmgren said he will be fine for Saturday night’s game against the Blues.

Then again, we’ve heard this before - just last week regarding Michael Leighton’s lower back injury.

Check Twitter on Friday for updates from practice in St. Louis at http://twitter.com/DNFlyers.

STAT OF THE NIGHT: Jeff Carter, who was a minus-1 with three shots on goal, played just 15:20. That’s a full 5:22 less than linemate Mike Richards. Carter, who has been a fixture in the past on the penalty kill, did not play a single second shorthanded last night. The Flyers were 4-for-5 on the penalty kill, including the biggest kill of the night in the final 74 seconds.

Carter used to be on the penalty kill? I don't remember ever seeing him out there on the PK.

Homer blew it by not trading Carter last year. Now in a free agent year he is mostly untradeable. They have always overrated him.

fmc023 - Carter will be an RFA after this season. He's not unrestricted. If another team goes after him, Flyers will get compensated with draft picks.

Carter is 6-3 fast and strong, not to mention he has a nice knack for putting puck into the net, why would we want to trade him

Because he doesn't play defense and for the 2nd game in a row couldn't bury the puck in front of a mostly open net - just like game 6 of the finals.

@fmc023 - theres nothing overrated about a guy who scored 29+ goals the past 3 seasons; not being a clutch or smart player is another story...but he does have 31 GW gaols in his career...hes ranked 4th best on his team..hes not overrated

Carter is the poster boy for soft. The Canadian's didn't over rate him. No Olympic invite and no trade considerations.

dennis - review Carter's playoff stats and you will get a better idea of what people are talking about. He has never put up postseason numbers. He is the perfect example of a guy needing time and space to be effective.

I have no problem with the way Carter played in the preseason. He should have scored last night. I think he may work out, even though I would have liked to see him traded.
