Gagne practicing with desperate Flyers

Desperate times call for desperate measures.

And down 3-0 in their best-of-seven Eastern Conference Semifinal series against the Bruins, with a chance of being swept tomorrow night at the Wachovia Center, the Flyers may be calling on a familiar face.

Simon Gagne re-joined the Flyers for practice at the Skate Zone today for the first time since fracturing his toe in Game 4 of the Flyers' first round series against the Devils. He is wearing a clear protective shield over his skate to prevent further damage.

Gagne had surgery on April 24 to have two screws inserted in his big right toe to promote healing.

Gagne, who scored 10 goals in the Flyers' post-Olympic break slate, was scheduled to have an MRI on Friday to assess the progress of that healing.

Now, a day before the MRI was scheduled to take place, Gagne is on the ice.

Surprised? Definitely not.

Here is a report from Ed Barkowitz at Bruins practice:

Through the first three games of this series, the Bruins have three wins and two major casualties.

Center David Krejci sustained a broken right wrist in Wednesday night's win and will miss the rest of the season. He joins winger Marco Sturm, who also won't be back after wrecking his right knee in the series opener.

Krejci, who tied for the team lead in scoring during the regular season, was drilled by Mike Richards at Boston's blue line six minutes into Wednesday's game. The fourth-year veteran of the Czech Republic was able to continue the play that eventually led to the game-winning goal. Krejci, a valuable part of the Bruins' power play, had four goals and four assists in nine playoff games this year.

Krejci had surgery immediately after the game at Baltimore's Union Memorial Hospital. Reserve defenseman Adam McQuaid also was injured on Wednesday. His status for Game 4 is uncertain.

The Bruins hold a 3-0 series lead and can close out the Flyers on Friday night (7 p.m., Versus) at the Wachovia Center. Game 5, if necessary, is Monday (7 p.m., CSN) in Boston.
