Free-agent Guerin skates with Flyers

POSTED: Wednesday, September 1, 2010, 1:46 PM

Free-agent forward Bill Guerin, who played last season for the Pittsburgh Penguins, was on the ice today in an informal workout with the Flyers at the Flyers Skate Zone in Voorhees, N.J.

"I was down in the area visiting my father-in-law who lives in Medford [N.J.]," Guerin said. "I was going to be in the area anyway and I wanted to get on the ice. My agent talked to Paul [Holmgren] about possibly having me come here and skate around with the guys. It was nice. It was good to finally get back on the ice and skate.”

Guerin was asked if any future deal could happen with the Flyers. "I really don’t know," he said. "Right now, honestly, it is just about getting back on the ice. I’m just getting myself in shape, skating shape, to be ready just in case anything happens somewhere. I am definitely looking to play this year.”

Guerin, who will turn 40 in November, has played 17 seasons in the NHL. He has played in 1,263 games and has 429 goals, 427 assists and 1,660 penalty minutes. He is a native of Wilbraham, Mass.

Despite his age he would be an upgrade to some of our wingers.

Absolutely sign him, we saw what he did to the pens in 09. And how much better he made crosby.

He'd be a good replacement for Asham. Guerin can still put the puck in the back of the net.

What about Rusty Fedetenko or Ryan Potulny? Must less expensive and younger wingers available.

Get rid of Shelley and have Carcillo as a healthy scratch. Lineup could look like this: Carter-Richards-Van Riemsdyk Hartnell-Briere-Leino Zherdev-Giroux-Guerin Powe-Betts-Laperriere

Get him signed and send Carbomb packing. He would fit nicely on the first line.

The Flyers could use his leadership skills and he's a good clubhouse influence.

He would be a very good pickup, especially on the 3rd line with the kids. I do not understand the hate for Carcillo, he shows up every night and is a pain for the other team yes he may take dumb penalties but alot of the Flyers do. I think with a full season under Lavvy he has another solid year and for anyone wanting to say he couldn't crack the playoff lineup, dude was hurt. Still curious about signing Shelley, hell i would have kept Ash over Carcillo as well but i still think Carcillo serves a purpose on this team. Unless the rumours about him going to LA are true, then this is all moot.

Gagne getting his jersey number assigned in Tampa today just hit me like a ton of bricks. Oh...the Guerin thing, sign him.

JVR was 2-1/2 years old when Guerin scored his first NHL goal.

Nothing like making a big rivalry even bigger. Guerin was loved in pgh...sign him just for that. Can't wait until oct 7..this would definitely make losing Asham easier to take.

Last year he had 21g and 24a in 78 games, and another 4g and 5a in 11 playoff games...can't argue with that at any age..might be a little more injury prone but who isn't on our team

Wow you people are morons. The Flyers got within a game of the Cup and you're calling for guy's heads. You must really be CAPS fans. Typical of why the National Media thinks you're the tops when it comes to boorish fans. GO Flyers!!!

This is a signing that actually makes sense. He can still score 20, add locker room leadership and is a feared on-ice presence. He'd be an awesome 3rd or 4th liner and ocassional PP sniper. SIGN HIM!

I love watching everyone want to add a hasbeen then keeping Carcillo. Someone who has a potential to be a better player and play similar to Lappy down the road or even Asham. Not many remember Guerin playing like Carcillo when he came into the NHL. Flyers added size bc we got our asses handed to us. Outplayed and out sized. Now a lot of you are asking to get rid of a few guys so it can happen again. As I said b4 Flyers need to beef up to a degree to win the cup. Learn from the past and it will happen.

Yup. I agree with the group on this one. No brainer - he would be a solid pick up and is a proven playoff performer. I like Powe, the only Kanata connection to the Flyers, so would be sad to see him go.

Guerin is a vet leader WHO WINS CUPS. Sign him and I don't care who you dump. This is a no-brainer. He can play 3rd line win gith Girxou and JVR until he is in shape. He'd look good with Richards and Carter too. While not as elite as Pronger, the concept is the same: Bring in a vet WINNER who has WON CUPS (plural folks) and put him with your younger players to show them consistency and drive. Holmgrem overpaid for 2 defensemen this off-season, overpaid Shelley for 3 years, resigned Carcillo, let Asham walk, and dumped Gagne for more salary. DO SOMETHING RIGHT THIS OFFSEASON.

Flyers_70: Wow, I hope you are old because you'll have an excuse for an idiotic post. Guerin has two Cups and scored more goals than Carcillo has taken skate-strides. What proof do you have that Carillo could become a top penalty-killer or contributor? His 12 goals in PHO? Nope, no proof. And I don't hate Carcillo, I actually like him. That's not the point. The Flyers don't need to BEEF up to win and if they did, they would have gotten Boogard or Laraque when they were available. O'Donnel and Walker are solid additions in that department, though overpaid for Walker. Shelley isn't bad, but at $1.1 over 3 years it's another case of Holmgrem overpaying. Back to Guerin. He brings a consistent winning attitude, points, and leadership and did it on TWO cup teams. I'll add John Madden and Bill Guerin to my team and you can take Stu Grimson & Paul Holmgrem.

I'm with MichaelZoe. This is a no-brainer. Sign Guerin and his Cup experience. Use him in limited minutes/games if necessary to keep him fresh. People will get injured, so there is no need to dump anyone other than for cap issues. If we end up effectively swapping Asham for Guerin, many of us (including me) have once again been outsmarted by Homer. Make this happen!!!!
