Flyers sign O'Donnell, Shelley
The Flyers have come to a one-year agreement with free agent defenseman Sean O’Donnell and forward Jody Shelley.
O'Donnell will earn $1 million this season with the possibility of performance-based bonuses.
O’Donnell, 38, skated with the Los Angeles Kings for the last two seasons. Last year, O’Donnell posted three goals and 12 assists for 15 points with a plus-14 rating. He turns 39 on Oct. 13.
O’Donnell is a 15-year NHL veteran, splitting time between the Kings, Devils, Wild, Bruins, Coyotes and Ducks. O’Donnell teamed up with Flyers defenseman Chris Pronger in 2007 to bring a Stanley Cup to Anaheim.
Last year in Los Angeles, O’Donnell earned $1.25 million.
O’Donnell will likely be the Flyers’ sixth defenseman, leaving Oskars Bartulis as the 7th defenseman or – depending on the cap situation – starting the season in the AHL. In order to make it to the AHL, Bartulis and his $600,000 salary would have to first clear waivers.
Shelley, meanwhile, signed a three-year deal worth $1.1 million per season. Shelley, 34, is a 6-foot-3, 220 pound instigator that posted two goals and 7 assists for 9 points over 57 games this year. Both of Shelley's goals this season came against the Flyers. He has posted more than 100 penalty minutes in a season six times in his career and more than 200 minutes in a season three times.
Shelley was being courted heavily by the New York Rangers this offseason, who offered him $825,000 this morning according to the New York Post.

Volchenkov just signed with the Devils for 6 years at $25,500,000 (about $4.25 a year). Not Rich Vos
Shelley was definately needed. The Rangers picked up Derek Boogaard today. Ferrell31

This is an amazing start. We are totally solid now, able to watch Boogard and Shelly go at it while our D shuts everyone down. All we need next is to dump 1 high price salary and bring in Guerin. I see two Cup runs back to back. MichaelZoe
Shelly is an instigator. Dont we have Carcillo and Cote for that? I'd rather keep Carillo. He wont cost that much more money. I'll pack Cote's bags and drive him out of town myself. He sucks, hasn't done anything since he's been here and can't win a fight. philliekev04
They better go out and get Nabokov. The goalies are starting to disappear and he's really the only one worth getting anyway. Everyone else are just backups. I don't care what people say about him in the playoffs. He's a GOOD goalie. And if this defense can make Leighton look good and bring us within 2 games from the Cup then imagine what it could do for Nabokov who is alot better than Leighton. No disrespect to Leighton because the guy definitly deserves a ton of credit. He really held his own against Boston and Montreal. philliekev04

Great...the Devils signed Volchenkov. You could argue they overpaid, but someone has to talk some sense into Ed Snider regarding his reluctance to sign Ruskies. Marcus Hooke
Meszaros and O'Donnell are good pickups for the 5th and 6th defensive spots. To me the real key is to get another good winger who can score. My idea is to put Carter at center and put Richards as his left wing. Richards played a very effective left wing in the Olympics and Carter was a fish out of water on right wing in the playoffs. I'd like to see us get a scorer to pair with Giroux rather than Asham.. Asham is fine as a 4th line center but we already have Laperierre to fill that spot, so I let Asham go and try to get a scorer to fill that spot. bradco

Flyers fan first, but I live in LA, have Kings season tickets, and have seen O'Donnell play and met him on a few occasions. Great guy, and he's about as solid of a 6th d-man as you're going to get. We won't have to worry when the third pairing comes out next season. I for one became visibly anxious during the playoffs whenever Parent, Krajicek or Bartulis was on the ice. I'm sure everyone on the bench did too. I think the Flyers now have the best top 6 all around defense in the east, and probably in the NHL. kprimo25
autumnknows - you don't know what you're talking about. The Flyers don't have an "inability to score." They were 8th in the league in Goals. Call us when you figure out how to translate statistics into intelligent hockey arguments. kprimo25
Why would you give up asham or carcillo, who both scored like 10 goals each in season and a few in the playoffs, for a useless goon who only scored twice last year, both against us? How is that an upgrade? How is that worth over a million a year? Ols school goons are worthless. You need someone who can fight AND chip in a few goals and asham did that. Hard to imagine asham wanted a lot more that shelley is costing. I don't like this at all. kodi69
NJD signed Volchenkov for 6 years at $4.25/yr. We trade for Meszaros who makes $4M a year and has 4 years remaining. Throw in O'Donnell's leadership and work ethic and I think Homer made the best of it. But I still hate that the Devils got a monster in Volchenkov. dri_as_a_bone
